Highlights Day 1 I Billabong Pro Pipeline 2023

Opening day of the 2023 CT season provided moments of excellence, elation, and elimination with World Champions clashing, CT returners flourishing, plus rookies staking their claim.

As the epicenter of the surf universe and the birthplace of the sport, it's only right for Pipeline to kick off the Championship Tour. Everyone enters the season with equal hopes of winning it all. The rookie class is thrown into the fire, the contenders return with one thing on their minds, and the surf world begins to follow the road to the Rip Curl WSL Finals. Pipeline sets the tone.

Freesurfing Around the WSL Final Five

Sometimes, the stars just all seem to align. Last week, the @World Surf League championship tour landed at Lower Trestles with a flurry of summer south swell on tap for the cobblestone mecca. Dreams were realized and hearts were broken at the beloved San Clemente break in an incredible day of competition.

With Final Five contestants practicing and local pros like Caroline Marks joining in on the perfection, there was no shortage of high action moments. Freesurf documentarian Scotty Hammonds was tee'd up on the beach to document all the action and has packed together the best 5 minutes for your viewing pleasure in, "name goes here." The World Tour Takes on Tahiti

After a 2 year hiatus, the @World Surf League Championship Tour pointed their compass south and headed for The End of the Road: Teahupoo. The contest was met with some of the best contestable conditions of the 2022 season and kept Final Five hopes and dreams alive for surfers like Kanoa Igarashi. Local Chopes specialist Kauli Vaast punched his time card as the contests wildcard and ran his golden ticket all the way to the final heat.

With all of that contest action, you knew the freesurf sessions had to be just as mindblowing. Ace lensman Scott Hammonds was there to document the early mornings and afternoons around it and has packed together only the best clips for a five minute highlight reel. Italo Ferreira, Caroline Marks, Kanoa Igarashi & crew in South Africa | World Championship Tour

Jeffreys Bay in South Africa has long been one of the most fabled stops in surfing. If J-Bay was a tennis court it would be a grand slam, if it was golf a course it would be a major. Whether you’re a fan of competition, or simply a surfing purist who is passionate about point break perfection, Jeffreys has all you could want and more, with a little bit of magic dust sprinkled over the top for good measure. In July 2022 J-Bay was on its best behaviour when the world’s elite surfers rolled into town, and the event and the free surfing that surrounded it were as good as it gets.

As the Indian Ocean came alive, and Ethan Ewing silently went about his business en route to a maiden Championship Tour victory and Tati Weston-Webb claimed a maiden female goofy victory for the women, our man Scotty Hammonds was on the sands of the Eastern Cape capturing the pick of the action.

From Jordy Smith putting on a masterclass in his home waters to Carissa Moore showing why she’s considered the the best lady to ever paddle into a wave at Supertubes, this edit has a little bit of everything. Stephanie Gilmore and Kelly Slater demonstrate what years of experience look like in picture postcard waves, while Kanoa Igarashi, Griffin Colapinto, Jack Robinson, Caroline Marks, Yago Dora and Italo Ferreira all put on virtuoso performances. Keep an eye out for young guns Molly Picklum and Crosby Colapinto too, as they show us once more why their days will come in the not-too-distant future.

At day’s end however there can only be one star and that’s the waves themselves. Take a bow, J-Bay, and we’ll see you again next year!
