Pumping Barrels Greet World’s Fanciest Surf Contest in the Maldives Taj Burrow wins the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy, again. “I didn’t know it got that big. It was like Sunset out the back.” That’s Taj Burrow, who just won the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy for the third time. These beautiful Indian Ocean atolls are well known for perfect, silky reef surf, but have rarely been compared to Oahu’s North Shore in terms of power. But the swell of the season decided to show up right on cue with the event last week, much to the delight of competitors — Burrow, Michael February, Jadson Andre, Jeremy Flores, Carissa Moore and Ahmed “Ammaday” Agil, all of whom spent hours in the water, trading off aquamarine blue right tubes. This particular event is unique beyond its sheer opulence, of which there’s no shortage. (Surfers talked as much about brunch as they did conditions, if that’s any indication.) Competitors surfed in three divisions -- singlefins, twinfins and thrusters -- across varying degrees of perfection and size at Sultans, one of the best right reefs in the wave-rich zone. And this year, it was actually big enough that they switched the twinfin and thruster divisions on day two ’cause it was so solid. Burrow ended up beating February in the final, but they both flew home smiling. Actually, we’re pretty sure everyone flew home smiling. RESULTS 1. Taj Burrow (AUS) 2700pts 2. Good-Epic: Fabio Plus Emilia Equals Day of the Year in Newport Beach “On Friday morning at dark, it had a little weird warble and super dredgey low tide,” said longtime Newport local Spencer Pirdy. “But by sun-up, it was clean and like photos I looked at as a little kid and dreamed about. Definitely a memorable morning. Pros were coming out, going, 'whoa, this is Southern California doing its impersonation of Puerto Escondido/Pipeline.' It was a very memorable swell. Wave of the Day: 12-Year-Old Kalama Stratton Barreled at Puerto Escondido! "That was the best wave I’ve ever gotten out there," says local grom. Thursday morning, August 1st, 12-year-old Kalama Stratton is sitting with the early morning pack at reasonably solid but not giant Puerto Escondido. His dad is on the beach, whistles him into a wave, but Kalama likes the one behind it better, and is hooted in by the supportive lineup. Not many kids out at Puerto still -- Kalama's the youngest regular, has been putting his time in over the past few years, and has been taken under everyone's collective wings. He paddles his borrowed 7'0" (his normal step-up is a 5'1") slightly late, but in the perfect spot. Makes the bottom turn, pulls in and starts driving. "I didn't think I was gonna make it," he said. "I was on the foam ball, but when I felt the spit hit my back I thought I would come out. Came out, claimed, and then fell. That was the best wave I’ve ever gotten at Puerto.” And then? "I came in and my dad was all stoked for me but had to go to work - so I paddled back out and surfed the rest of the morning."
