Backdoor Shootout Day 3 Highlights: Kala DeSoto, Pomai Hoapili and Max Torres win their divisions! After a tricky week+, the Da Hui Shootout ran on Sunday, Expression Session style. Due to slow rising surf, the teams decided to not waste the day, so instead had an all-out surf competition called the "Legacy of the Duke." Surfers surfed on their own in a non-team format and were scored accordingly. Kala DeSoto got first Sheldon Paishon got second Max Torres won SUP and Pomai Hoapili won longboard. Backdoor Shootout Day 2 Highlights: A Taste of What's to Come The Da Hui Backdoor Shootout is officially underway. After nearly ten days of a tricky forecast, the waiting ended and the show finally began. By first light, more than 100 surfers filled the lineup at Pipeline and Backdoor. At 7:59 a.m., the crowd cleared as the first of seven teams paddled out. This marked the 30th edition of the Shootout, and while past events have leaned heavily toward Pipeline, today told a different story. All of the meaningful scores came through Backdoor, with the right-hander delivering two clear standout heats from Da Boyz and Team Peru. Wave of the Day went to Kala DeSoto, who disappeared deep and emerged all the way through to Off the Wall. With an extension to the forecast window granted by the Mayor’s Office and one round now in the books, the Shootout is setting up for a powerful conclusion. The coming days are expected to be XXL, with strong north winds and heavy wash-through sets. Conditions look better over the weekend, but far from perfect. Pipeline always picks the winner—and whoever finds the diamonds in the rough will be $50,000 richer. Mahalo to the North Shore community, the water patrol, and Hui O He’e Nalu for keeping this event rooted in the loving memory of Duke Kahanamoku.
