“The Board That Wouldn’t Die” Soli Bailey on his magic Maps to Nowhere swallowtail Soli Bailey’s Luke Short-shaped 6’0” swallowtail has survived six Maps to Nowhere trips. It’s flown farther than most humans. It’s certainly spent more time in the tube than most surfboards. And somehow, it refuses to crease, buckle or break, despite the kinds of waves Maps trips tend to find. We asked him about it. “Those Maps trips really changed the way I think about ordering boards. Before that, I was mostly just riding standard shortboards: light glass, shaped well, and they all went great. But there wasn’t much variety. They were kinda stock-standard — like what you’d expect a pro to ride in a contest or a freesurf when you’re just trying to surf as well as possible. Not boring in a bad way, just familiar, dependable rip boards. “But once we started turning up at heavier, longer pointbreaks, I realized I needed something different— something with more drive, more speed, and more hold. A board that was really built for good waves. That’s where the direction changed. I started ordering boards with a little more weight, heavier glassing, swallowtails. Basically, boards that could handle serious water movement. The model I ended up on is designed specifically for those kinds of conditions. “When it comes to getting a new board, you pick one up and almost immediately know if it’s going to be magic. Before you’ve even surf it, everything just feels right: the weight, the balance under your arm, the rail shape. And that board ended up becoming my all-rounder. It works in everything, from average, junky surf all the way up to six-foot, driving, carving waves. For its size (6’0”), it’s incredibly versatile. It really punches above its weight, but at the same time, it still performs surprisingly well in subpar conditions. “On those trips, the waves can be so powerful they absolutely destroy boards. I quickly realized you need at least a couple in the quiver that can survive serious punishment — boards that feel like you could drive a car over them and they’d still hold together. And this board in particular just won’t die. “I’ve always believed that most boards work in barrels, because you’re really just setting a line and going. As long as the board has enough foam, holds on the face, and doesn’t snap, you can pretty much ride anything. Ian Crane, Noah Wegrich, Soli Bailey and Laura Crane (eventually) find rugged redemption The underlying theme of any surf trip is optimism. There are empty perfect waves out there, just a matter of getting to ‘em at the right time. This most recent Maps to Nowhere adventure — featuring Ian Crane, Noah Wegrich, Soli Bailey and Laura Crane exploring a rugged, cold and unpredictable stretch of coast — embodied that spirit. How rugged? “It’s in our DNA: don’t go to the water,” local guide explained. “That’s where you go to work or go to die. It’s raw and brutal up here — and not friendly for ocean activities.” Thing is, this crew was here looking for exactly that. And after a few skunks, hours and hours in the car, rain, wind and swells that wouldn’t play nice, they found empty, reasonably perfect waves. Not 10-foot slabs, but the kind of fun that most surfers hop on a plane for. As British surfer Laura Crane said a couple days into the trip, “You can only be as stoked as what’s in front of you.” Which, in this case, turned out to be more than enough.
