Welcome to Episode 1 of Stab Highway presented by Monster Energy, a series inspired by Thrasher’s ‘King of the Road’.

Self-serious surfers, please check your bosu balls at the door. We’re here for a good time and a good time only. Nudity, morbid pie consumption, and Monster can shotguns are not just tolerated, but required.

Here’s how our newest surf game works:

In Stab Highway Australia presented by Monster Energy, there are four teams with four surfers apiece. The teams are selected middle-school-gym-class-style by our captains, Holly Wawn, Pacha Light, Jaleesa Vincent, and Macy Callaghan.

The other surfers include Shaun Manners, Noa Deane, Wade Goodall, Harry Bryant, Dakoda Walters, Reef Heazlewood, Dion Agius, Sheldon Simkus, Mackenzie Bowden, Chippa Wilson, Coby Perkovich, and Benny Howard.

Once the teams are chosen, each of them will be given a booklet of 30 surf-related challenges that they must complete, or attempt to complete, within a 10-day period in the state of New South Wales. Every team has the same exact challenges.

At the end of the trip, the 4×30 challenges will be reviewed by a panel of esteemed judges — Ozzy Wright, Kai Neville, and Stab’s own Danny Johnson — who will decide which team performed them the best, the worst, and wherever in between for each specific task.

Team Edit: Dumpster Diver 2

The idea for this board came when Dane was riding his original Dumpster Diver while filming "Out of the Rafters" edit for Chapter 11 last year. He was was tripping out how how tiny and short the Dumpster Diver felt and wanted to build a longer - modernized version that still tapped into the magic of the original.

The DD2 has a wider nose and tail, more nose and tail rocker, and a more subtle single concave. These updates, among other tweaks, allow the board to excel in a wider range of conditions and letting your rip as hard as you think you do.

Dane also made a special set of fins for the board, that will work well in other designs if you like that slightly 2+1 feel.

Every surfer knows about Queensland's point breaks. If you’re lucky enough to have surfed them, you'd still need extra luck to have caught a wave from the maddening crowd. If you haven’t made it to Australia’s Gold Coast, you’ve no doubt dreamt of Pacific corduroy swells lining up to the horizon, before breaking flawlessly down the ruler edged sandbars that run from Snapper Rocks to Greenmount through Coolangatta and on to Kirra. On its day you could argue that the Superbank is the greatest wave in the world, with those best days falling in the Australian summer, with the cyclone season running from January through May. Waves throughout the rest of the year are common but never the type you’ve dreamt about… until now.

With Australia entering a third straight La Niña pattern for only the third time in recorded history, the flooding has been Biblical and the waves have started breaking like never before. Literally. As the Challenger Series got down to business in Portugal, on the other side of the planet the points started rifling and surfers couldn’t believe it as the Gold Coast came alive in October. Julian Wilson came down from the Sunshine Coast to open up Jacob Wooden’s Sessions edit, while a list of the Gold Coast’s past, present and emerging greats tore into the freakish swell. Everyone from local legends like Joel Parkinson and Dean Morrison got their fill, core warriors such as Nick Vasicek and Asher Pacey turned up the volume, while longtime Aussie performers like Mitch Crews, Soli Bailey and Wade Carmichael all delivered the kind of performances you’ve come to know and love. Throw in a cameo from new Gold Coast resident and world number three Jack Robinson and the waves didn’t stand a chance.

Josh and Sierra Kerr proved they’re the best father-daughter combination in the game and will be for years, lighting up the points then loading up the jet-ski and heading over the seaway to the Gold Coast's favorite sand-spit island, and its miles of empty beach break barrels. Here they were joined by Morgan Cibilic, Jacob Willcox and New Zealand’s greatest export Kehu Butler as the waves continued to fire. We round things out back down in Coolangatta, with man of the moment Reef Heazlewood showing he’s still got game in salt water, even as he breaks the internet with his recent chlorinated wave pool exploits.

Australian Surf Championships Highlight Clip

The Australian Surf Championships were held in Port Macquarie, NSW over 17 days in August.

Over 500 surfers descended on Biripi Country in the heart of the NSW mid-north coast for the event.

The Australian Titles were first held in 1963 and won by Robert ‘Nat’ Young (NSW) and Phyllis O’Donnell (NSW). This is the 57th Australian Championship event in which NSW has won 34 Men’s and 30 Women’s Titles.

The Australian Surf Championships is proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

The event is also proudly supported by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, the Australian Institute of Sport, mySURF.tv, Surfing Australia and Surfing NSW.

2022 Australian Surf Championships Shortboard Division

Freya Prumm (NSW) and Reef Heazlewood (QLD) are the first 2022 Australian Surf Championships for 2022. Both Prumm and Heazlewood are long-time competitive surfers and first-time Australian Champions.
