JS Surfboards Bali – A Year in the Islands

There’s something about Bali. The island has always been a melting pot — of cultures, of waves, and of surfers who come here to chase both. Over the last year, the JS Surfboards Bali team has been writing its own chapter in that story.

Led by Tai “Buddha” Graham — one of the main proponents of Bali’s modern surf scene — the crew is a mix of homegrown talent and international firepower. You’ve got Bronson Meydi, Indonesia’s first-ever world junior champion, a kid who grew up threading the Bukit and is now setting the pace globally. There’s Varun Tandjung, as stylish and smooth as anyone you’ll find under a lip in Indo. Add in heavy hitters like Koby Abberton, Bruno Santos, Reubyn Ash, Othmane Choufani, Koldo Illumbe, and you start to get a picture of the depth. Then there’s the next generation — Made Dera, Theo Radcliffe, Darma Bleronk — all coming up fast, alongside Bali transplant Dylan Hayllar, who splits time between coaching, competing, and testing the latest models out of the JS factory.

The boards themselves tell the other half of the story. Whether it’s the Big Horse under Buddha and Koby, Bronson’s deadly combo of the Golden Child and Big Horse, Varun’s Monsta 10 and FMN3, or Dylan’s rotation of Xero Gravity and Raging Bull, the whole quiver has been tested in the full Indo spectrum: high-performance Canggu ramps, cavernous Desert Point barrels, and the kind of heavy outer-island water that turns toys into tools real quick.

And it’s not just about the clips. This short film is the result of 12 months of board evolution, rider development, and feedback loops. Jason Stevenson — JS himself — regularly flies to Bali, shaping custom batches for the team and paddling out with them in-between. That direct connection between shaper and surfer is rare, and it’s part of what makes the Bali hub so strong.

The JS Surfboards Bali store in Canggu has become the physical heartbeat of the program. With over 300 boards on the racks and a crew who live and breathe the lifestyle, it’s the place where local groms, traveling pros, and everyday surfers cross paths. It’s not uncommon to walk in and see a fresh stack of Monstas being tuned for a team rider, only to paddle out later that day and share waves with Sammy Pupo, Mateus Herdy, or even the likes of Julian Wilson and Joel Parkinson, who drop through Bali often enough to feel like locals themselves.

Bali’s surf scene is unique. The waves are world-class, sure, but the community is what makes it. Respect the locals, share the lineup, and you’ll quickly see why so many of the world’s best call this place their second home. For the JS Bali team, it’s home base — a proving ground where surfboards evolve, surfers progress, and the level keeps getting pushed higher.

This film is a look back at the past 12 months, but really, it’s a snapshot of what’s happening every day here. Boards under feet, spray in the air, and the Bali crew showing us why the island continues to be the beating heart of surfing in Asia.

Ramps, Tubes and Beyond in the Mentawais | SESSIONS

Two weeks in a boat plying the waves of the Mentawai Island chain is as good as it gets for a surfer, no matter your stance, your gender, or your preference for peaks or points. Maybe, just maybe, you’d prefer cooler water or the option for beach breaks but if these are your complaints then you’ll never be happy with your lot in life. Besides, if Red Bull’s favorite Basqueman Natxo Gonzalez, who made his name in the freezing waters of the Atlantic and at the world’s wildest beach break of Nazaré, isn’t upset with the state of play then honestly who would be?

With conditions perfect our crew cast off the bowlines and set sail from Padang, in Sumatra, to cross the Mentawai Straight with sights set on any of the archipelago’s big name acts. And boy did they score, from Macaronis to HTs and all points and peaks in between.

Natxo went toe-to-toe with Conor Maguire for the charger’s belt, while their high performance peers had a shootout for the ages in the young guns division. Aussie upstart Jarvis Earle met German-Costa Rican flyboy Leon Glatzer for the first time, and what better place to sound out a new sparring partner than in the world’s most perfect ramps? As for Californian Dimitri Poulos, he claimed over and again that he’d found his version of paradise, his actions more than matching his words. Izzi Gomez showed up and blew up, as is her way no matter the craft she’s atop, while Indonesian future star Bronson Meydi regularly stole the show in man a session, despite his little known status, proving once again he’s one to keep an eye on for sure.

As for the headline acts, Adriano de Souza showed the kind of form that won him a much-deserved world title in 2015, while Caroline Marks demonstrated time and again that in tropical tubes over wickedly sharp coral she’s a force to be reckoned with. Think Caroline’s licking her lips in anticipation of Teahupo’o’s welcome return to the women’s Championship Tour lineup in a couple of weeks?
