This coming weekend, Olympic Surfing becomes a thing. Can anyone stop Gabriel or Carissa from winning Gold? Will it all makes sense? Will Roy and HG call it? (hope so). Anyway, it turns out I have footage of nearly all Olympic Surfers, so I put them all together for a preview.

39 of 40 Olympic Surfers Confirmed for Tokyo 2020 in Surf City El Salvador

The penultimate day of action at the 2021 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games featured a flurry of Olympic qualification at the break of La Bocana.

39 of the 40 Olympic surfers have officially been confirmed for Surfing’s Olympic debut next month at Tokyo 2020. The 40 qualified surfers will hail from 17 different countries, a display of the universality of the sport that has been a central part of the ISA’s mission to make a better world through Surfing.

The 2021 ISA World Surfing Games awards slots to the highest ranking eligible 5 men and 7 women – 11 of which were decided on Saturday.

The 7 women’s slots were claimed by Portugal’s Teresa Bonvalot and Yolanda Sequeira, Costa Rica’s Leilani McGonagle, Peru’s Daniella Rosas, Japan’s Mahina Maeda and Amuro Tsuzuki, and France’s Pauline Ado.

4 of the 5 men’s slots were earned by Germany’s Leon Glatzer, Peru’s Lucca Mesinas and Miguel Tudela, and Chile’s Manuel Selman.

The one men’s slot left up for grabs will be decided by two surfers: Japan’s Hiroto Ohhara and Shun Murakami. Both have advanced far enough to make it to finals day – Murakami in the Main Event and Ohhara in the Repechage.

Surfing’s Final 12 Olympic Qualification Slots Soon to Be Revealed in El Salvador

The 2021 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games has arrived at the final weekend of competition, set to crown World Surfing Games Champions and finalize Surfing’s qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Games.

12 slots remain to be awarded through the event – 5 for men and 7 for women – awarded to the top ranking eligible athletes.

Of the 16 women left in the Main Event and Repechage Rounds, 13 are gunning for the 7 slots. Three of the 16 surfers will not factor into the qualification because Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons have already qualified via the 2019 WSL Championship Tour (CT), the top event in the qualification hierarchy, and USA’s Alyssa Spencer cannot qualify because her country has already reached their quota of two women in Carissa Moore and Caroline Marks.

On the men’ side, 12 of the remaining 17 surfers are aiming to earning the 5 qualification slots. Four of the surfers left in the draw, Owen Wright (AUS), Jeremy Flores (FRA), Michel Bourez (FRA), and Kanoa Igarashi (JPN), have already qualified via the 2019 WSL CT.
