Italo Ferreira, Caroline Marks, Kanoa Igarashi & crew in South Africa | World Championship Tour

Jeffreys Bay in South Africa has long been one of the most fabled stops in surfing. If J-Bay was a tennis court it would be a grand slam, if it was golf a course it would be a major. Whether you’re a fan of competition, or simply a surfing purist who is passionate about point break perfection, Jeffreys has all you could want and more, with a little bit of magic dust sprinkled over the top for good measure. In July 2022 J-Bay was on its best behaviour when the world’s elite surfers rolled into town, and the event and the free surfing that surrounded it were as good as it gets.

As the Indian Ocean came alive, and Ethan Ewing silently went about his business en route to a maiden Championship Tour victory and Tati Weston-Webb claimed a maiden female goofy victory for the women, our man Scotty Hammonds was on the sands of the Eastern Cape capturing the pick of the action.

From Jordy Smith putting on a masterclass in his home waters to Carissa Moore showing why she’s considered the the best lady to ever paddle into a wave at Supertubes, this edit has a little bit of everything. Stephanie Gilmore and Kelly Slater demonstrate what years of experience look like in picture postcard waves, while Kanoa Igarashi, Griffin Colapinto, Jack Robinson, Caroline Marks, Yago Dora and Italo Ferreira all put on virtuoso performances. Keep an eye out for young guns Molly Picklum and Crosby Colapinto too, as they show us once more why their days will come in the not-too-distant future.

At day’s end however there can only be one star and that’s the waves themselves. Take a bow, J-Bay, and we’ll see you again next year!

Red Bull Lisbon Conquest is the second instalment of our touring weekend-long skateboard extravaganzas paying homage to the skate culture of great cities around the globe.

Each one of our Red Bull Conquest events features as its centrepiece a free weekend skate contest held on replicas of some of the host city’s most iconic skate spots, in a head-to-head eliminator format which crowns a new king and queen of each stop in a city-centre showdown which brings together the best local and international skateboarding talent.

As with last year’s awesome Red Bull Paris Conquest, however, there is much more to our weekend celebration than just the contest itself.

We throw ourselves into the life of the city itself for the short period in which the event is in town- and Lisbon was no different. From street missions to sampling local delicacies, checking in with local skate shops to find out what’s new in their city and kicking it with the guest skaters who have flown in from around the world to add their energy to the party mix, the rev’s are guaranteed to be high throughout.

Red Bull Conquest is unique among skate contests in that the format is one-on-one sudden death knockout, with judges Ricardo Fonseca, Thaynan Costa, Louisa Menke, Anthony Claravall and Dani Lebron each choosing winners based on overall rider impression within each 3- minute jam rather than scoring trick tallies.

The rider with most votes after each bout progresses to the next knockout round. Simple, and exciting!

We made three skateboards from upcycled materials and gave them to pro skater Madars Apse to see whether these alternative materials are strong enough for skateboarding tricks and shredding massive stairsets. Jordy & Mikey Explore Everything SA Has to Offer | Shaping Jordy

When the world turned upside-down in 2020, lifelong friends Jordy Smith and Mikey February took advantage of being home for the first full winter in a long time to hang out, hit the road and chase the South African winter.

The boys started their journey up in Durban, where Smith grew up. From there they made their way down the East Coast, stopping at some known (and other much-lesser-known) spots along the way, connecting with various surfers as they went. Then, via the famed right-hand point break of Jeffreys Bay – with which Smith has such a close connection – and the Southern Cape (known as the Eden District), before ending up in the clear, icy barrels of Cape Town. An epic journey of more than 1,600km.

"I don't think it could have come at a better time," Smith says. "On tour, your mindset stays in that competitive zone the entire year. This year, with everything that's happened, it's allowed me to break away from that and just really relax. That's been really refreshing.”

While the underlying theme of the trip and the subsequent film is about the coast and people who shaped Smith's career, it's also very much about the alternative surfboard shapes February chooses to ride. For Smith, fully focused on performance the entire year, it was an eye-opener into a different angle on how to approach waves and it got him even more amped to surf.

Chris Pierre has been killing it for years. Whether you know him from Instagram, his seemingly endless Berrics coverage, or seeing him at LA's local street spots and skateparks, you know his bag of tricks is heavy and his consistency is top-notch.

That's why we knew we had to hit him up to film a Checkout video part. And of course, he delivered. Crack open a cold one and enjoy a mix of tech and big drops in Chris Pierre's latest video part.

Jordy's First Winter at Home in Years | Shaping Jordy

When the world turned upside-down in 2020, lifelong friends Jordy Smith and Mikey February took advantage of being home in South Africa for the first full winter in a long, long time. Unable to travel internationally, Smith and the man known as 'M-Feb' took full advantage as soon as lockdown restrictions were lifted locally – loading up Smith’s Jeep Wrangler and going surf tripping.

The duo's timing turned out to be perfect, as they scored some of the best spots in South Africa in what was one of the best winters for waves in recent memory. The pair had never done a trip together because of their busy schedules, and Smith's plan was to "take a few feathers out of M-Feb's stylish cap.”

February did his time on the competitive circuit and ticked the Championship Tour box in 2018. After failing to qualify for the 2019 edition, he smoothly shed the contest singlet for good and carved a niche as the poster boy for smooth lines, alternative craft and one-footed Judo floaters. Smith wanted to hit the road, tackle a serious supply of swell, and tap into those vibes.

"I think the more I free surf and the more I score those really good days, the more I grow and I fall even more in love with surfing," says Smith. "I often think to myself: 'Is that even possible?' But I do. I just continue to get that excitement of where you're just chomping at the bit to be able to get on that next swell. To drive all hours of the night just for that single wave – you know, it's the greatest high ever."
