The Squad Skates Japan | Red Bull Drop In Japan Tour Japan has exploded into the wider consciousness of the skateboarding world in recent years. Whether through the internet-busting antics of Gou Miyagi, the Far Eastern Skate Network’s distinctive and innovative video output, the lore of the Osaka Daggers or the domination of the women’s contest circuit, Japan is a bigger part of skateboarding’s cultural soup than at any time before now. Within that context, it was perhaps inevtiable that Red Bull’s world-cruising Drop-In Tour would rock up in the land of the rising sun having already blazed a trail through the US and Europe hitherto. August 2023, therefore, saw a grip of our international skate squadron assemble to put on two ballistic skate demos in the cities of Tokyo and Osaka and hit the banks, railings and assorted street furniture we could find along the way on a 500 kilometre whistle-stop tour of this fantastic country in the height of summer. The demos at Tokyo’s Murasaki and Osaka’s Tiger Rack skateparks bookended the journey with a lot of excited Japanese skateboarders getting the chance to be up close and personal with Zion Wright, Ryan Decenzo, Torey Pudwill, Margie Didal, Alex Sorgente, Jake Wooten and Max Habanec in both cities, where a lot of new friendships were formed, autographs signed and stokage freely distributed in a tour that seems sure to become part of Japanese skate history. Skating A Museum After Hours London’s Natural History Museum is famous throughout the world both for its collections (including the giant blue whale skeleton known as Hope) and the architectural sweep of the building itself. Open since the 1880’s, the city’s grandest museum is a mere stone’s throw from the Royal Albert Hall location of our 2016 Hold The Line contest, and so when the opportunity to get locked into the space’s possibilities arose, we were all-in. From Argentina, Belgium, the Philippines and Brazil four of our favourite women in the world answered the call to skate one of the world’s most famous locations for one night only. Margie Didal, Leticia Bufoni, Lore Bruggeman and Aldana Bertran all converged for a never-to-be-repeated skate session inside the fabled halls- all on the proviso that whatever went down nothing got broken! With just a few minor mods required the session was on, with an injured Margie in charge of hype duties throughout the night as our squad bagged as much footage as they could from an almost unbelievably photogenic environment. Margie Didal: do what you love | By Her Rules Margie first encountered skateboarding while helping her mother sell street food to make ends meet. Now she supports her family as one of the top skateboarders in Asia. Being a skater, she is a bit of a rebel in Filipina culture, but she is the sport sensation of the country and a strong chance of a medal at Tokyo 2020.
