Lost in Shanghai w/ Angelo Caro, Max Habanec and Vladik Scholz | SKATE INTERSECTION

The Chinese port city of Shanghai has sparked Western imaginations for centuries. Wildly evocative of adventure and international intrigue, the city has been the secondary star of many movies which have used her alleyways and skylines as a majestic backdrop to everything from Hollywood romances to martial arts blockbusters.

As an international trading hub, Shanghai’s postwar building project has seen the municipality become one of the world’s most populous cities, replete with suburbs and satellite towns which run the gamut of architectural modes from Art Deco to Soviet neoclassical and most points in between.
With Barcelona unofficially regarded as Blown Out in filming terms by 2004 (post- Yeah Right!), Shanghai rapidly became a go-to destination for any sponsored skater who wanted to log footage on spots that didn’t look the same as every other video.

What many of those footage-conscious skaters weren't aware of, however, is the existence within Shanghai of several design districts which are intended to pay homage to various world capitals.
We set out to explore them in an international skate mission to reflect Shanghai’s status as one of the world’s most enigmatic and distinctive destinations.

Linking up with two expat rippers in England’s Dan Wileman and America’s Chris Blake came Czech road warrior Maxim Habanec, Germany’s widely- regarded style supremo Vladik Scholz and the terrifyingly talented Peruvian upsetter Angelo Caro, currently in the skating form of his life (check out the kicker to bench two-piece line here!).

Entrusted to film the whole experience was Belgium’s superb Stijn Lammertyn, and with veteran Argentinian photographer Gaston Francisco holding it down on photography and vibes, most contingencies seemed covered for a productive, enlightening alternative view of one of the world’s mega-cities, as seen from a skater’s perspective. Stijn knocked it out of the park on this one.

The World Loves Skateboarding | Best Of Red Bull Skateboarding 2020

2020 was a most unusual year, but it will be remembered as one of skateboarding's most globally successful years.

The reasons for that are many and varied, sometimes overlapping, but a perfect convergence of circumstances saw skate shops around the world unable to meet demand, small brands suddenly able to clear out entire inventories, and uptake – oftentimes re-uptake – of skating worldwide at a level not seen since the headiest days of decades past.

It was at breakfast the morning after Red Bull Skateboarding’s 2020 planning meeting last January that the newspaper headline spoke of a city being locked down far away. It's doubtful that anyone back then could have foreseen the last 12 months playing out the way they have, but with so many projects already under way globally the race was on to bring them all in – safely, and in whole.

From Patrik Wallner’s pioneering Uzbekistan skate project to contests like Simple Session, Red Bull Solus & Red Bull Bowl Rippers to RAW EDITS with Jamie Foy, CJ Collins & more to introducing the world to Madars Skate Tales to skating Larvikite with Torey Pudwill & crew to exploring the spirit of skateboarding in Africa, 2020 will go down in as an epic year in our history books!

Skatepark Turned Board Game – How We Made ‘The Maze’ w/ Madars Apse, Vladik Scholz & Crew

A man ever on the hunt for new challenges and terrains, German ripper Vladik Scholz linked up with master skatepark craftsman Andreas Schutzenberger to roll out a pioneering indoor skatepark project: a hydraulic tilting skatepark labyrinth known as The Maze. Based on the ubiquitous childhood marble game of yore, Schutzi’s 40-ton, 21 sq m skatepark creation is suspended 3m into the air on a series of hydraulic jacks which make the floor slope in any chosen direction – even as you skate it!

Watch Gustavo Ribeiro, Jost Arens and Madars Apse join Vladik Scholz to rip a hydraulically alive skatepark pursued by a malicious marble in his latest creative skate adventure.

Vladik linked up with master skatepark craftsman Andreas Schutzenberger to roll out a pioneering indoor skatepark project: a hydraulic tilting skatepark labyrinth known as The Maze. Based on the ubiquitous childhood marble game of yore, Schutzi’s 40-tonne, 21 square-metre skatepark creation is suspended 3 metres into the air on a series of hydraulic jacks which make the floor slope in any chosen direction – even as you skate it!

If you have ever skated a makeshift run-up or a jerry-rigged flatbank, you will doubtless be aware what an absolute nightmare trying to re-calibrate the physics and balance of just rolling on a shifting surface is. Busting tricks on an undulating first-floor skate spot, let alone rolling around on it, takes more than nerve: it takes instinctive, reflexive balance.

So, when Vladik chose Portugal's Gustavo Ribeiro, Germany's Jost Arens and Latvia's very own Madars Apse to come and check out what IOU Ramps managed to create this time around he knew he was selecting three skaters who have proven their ability to adapt and deliver time and again.What he didn’t tell them, however, was that the final twist designed into the slanted and enchanted skatepark was a giant chromeball, released to respond to the demands of gravity and pursue them around the labyrinth, full tilt!

Quarantine Diaries | Vladik Scholz

As a skateboarder and Titus Pro, Vladik Scholz has been a household name in the international skate scene for many years. Very few people know though that Vladik also studies clothing technology on the side. Particularly in the current situation, this education can be extremely helpful, especially in view of an upcoming duty to wear mouth and face protection all over germany. We visited Vladi just recently and found out: "Those are really nice protective things that Mr. Scholz brings from the drawing board to his mouth"!

A Skate Mission Train Ride Deep Into Uzebekistan | HOTEL UZBEKISTAN Part 2

All aboard as our skate tour of Uzbekistan continues on to the virgin terrain of Nukus with Ethan Loy, Rob Wooten, Vladik Scholz & Pasha Kuznetsov!

As soon as we felt like we’d gathered enough skate clips from Tashkent to get a sense of the place, we hopped on a train and left the capital behind, heading west. Skateboarding-wise, Nukus was like a blank canvas. There was no local scene and I'm pretty sure no one had seriously skated there before us. We didn't have any guides or spot maps – we totally freestyled it and tested our internal spot radars, or what we might call luck.

If you look up Uzbekistan in travel books, most of the pages will be dedicated to ancient cities like Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand. Those very special cities were on our list, too – and that's where we were headed, next. Stay tuned for our third and final part of Hotel Uzbekistan!

Skate Central Asia with Ethan Loy & Crew | HOTEL UZBEKISTAN Part 1

Join Ethan Loy along with his crew consisting of Rob Wootton, Vladik Scholz and Pasha Kuznetsov in part one of a huge overland skate mission of Central Asia for Patrik Wallner's new three-part series called Hotel Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia, a vast region within Eurasia which is sandwiched neatly between Russia, China, India and the Caspian Sea. It's pretty much the geographical heart of Eurasia and for many centuries these lands were an important meeting point for merchants and travellers on the Silk Road.

Our skate trip started off in Tashkent. The capital of Uzbekistan turned out to be a 'big city life' type-of-place: it has all the attributes of a modern capital, mixed with traditional culture and a predominantly post-Soviet architectural style. It was fun to skate there!

I would describe Tashkent as a convenient entrance to Uzbekistan, but the country has so much more to offer and so, after a solid start in the capital, we were ready to ride the train across the country. The next stop for us would the city of Nukus, which lay over 1,000km to the west of where we began our Uzbek skate mission. Stay tuned for Part Two dropping soon!
