Skateboarding Around The World | Best Of Red Bull Skateboarding 2021 2021 was a big year for all of us here at Red Bull Skateboarding: from the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the palm trees of Brazilian backyard bowl bonanzas, our signature live experiences returned for those lucky enough to attend in the flesh- and broadcast live around the planet for anyone else to savour from the comfort of our own homes. Elsewhere in skateboarding’s biggest year ever, we went street level in some of the world’s most iconic cities: from meeting the locals in Philadelphia, to shredding unseen Shanghai, to spot-hunting in a near-deserted Prague. Our intrepid travel series Skate Escape saw the first pro skate tour of Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo, while half a world away in the Philippines our girl Margie Didal showed us how necessity can be the mother of invention as she gave us a sneaky peek at her new personal indoor training spot. One of the biggest skate projects undertaken in 2021 was of course TJ Rogers’ epic love letter to the Canadian skate scenes of his youth, Steady Pushing. His gargantuan road odyssey across Canada capped a year which saw his effervescent disposition and ageless ability on a skateboard put TJ close to the top of everyone’s favourite skater lists. While the eyes of the world turned to skateboarding’s debut in Tokyo last summer, we continued as ever throughout the year to support, promote and document the wilder shores of skateboarding culture which flourish both within and without the spotlight. This, then, is a sampler of some of the fun Red Bull Skateboarding had in 2021. Hope to see you out there in 2022, and beyond!

Lost in Shanghai w/ Angelo Caro, Max Habanec and Vladik Scholz | SKATE INTERSECTION The Chinese port city of Shanghai has sparked Western imaginations for centuries. Wildly evocative of adventure and international intrigue, the city has been the secondary star of many movies which have used her alleyways and skylines as a majestic backdrop to everything from Hollywood romances to martial arts blockbusters. As an international trading hub, Shanghai’s postwar building project has seen the municipality become one of the world’s most populous cities, replete with suburbs and satellite towns which run the gamut of architectural modes from Art Deco to Soviet neoclassical and most points in between. With Barcelona unofficially regarded as Blown Out in filming terms by 2004 (post- Yeah Right!), Shanghai rapidly became a go-to destination for any sponsored skater who wanted to log footage on spots that didn’t look the same as every other video. What many of those footage-conscious skaters weren't aware of, however, is the existence within Shanghai of several design districts which are intended to pay homage to various world capitals. We set out to explore them in an international skate mission to reflect Shanghai’s status as one of the world’s most enigmatic and distinctive destinations. Linking up with two expat rippers in England’s Dan Wileman and America’s Chris Blake came Czech road warrior Maxim Habanec, Germany’s widely- regarded style supremo Vladik Scholz and the terrifyingly talented Peruvian upsetter Angelo Caro, currently in the skating form of his life (check out the kicker to bench two-piece line here!). Entrusted to film the whole experience was Belgium’s superb Stijn Lammertyn, and with veteran Argentinian photographer Gaston Francisco holding it down on photography and vibes, most contingencies seemed covered for a productive, enlightening alternative view of one of the world’s mega-cities, as seen from a skater’s perspective. Stijn knocked it out of the park on this one. Watch all our epic skate trips around the globe in one place:

Max Habanec in the streets of Prague | Raw Edit Czech ruler Maxim Habanec and his wingman Honza Navrátil spent the lockdown months of 2021 on a filming mission throughout the quiet streets of Prague. The results of their battles with the occasionally unforgiving surfaces of this ancient city became a new, shared part which saw them take on some treacherously kinked (and hitherto untouched) handrails in a city most skaters only associate with Stalin Plaza and Mystic skatepark. This raw edit from the rugged terrain of the Czech capital and beyond celebrates the heart required to go out and break yourself off when nobody is making you. Max is making himself synonymous with the skate lore of one of the world’s most famous cities, and he is bringing Honza Navrátil along for the ride. Enjoy a side of Prague you never see!
