Building Skateparks & Community With The Uganda Skateboard Society | SKATE TALES S2 Ep 5

The Uganda Skateboard Society has recently launched a fundraiser with the goal of raising money to buy land to build their next skatepark. In 2016 the local skaters in Uganda built a DIY skatepark, which has formed a cornerstone of the Uganda Skateboard Society and become a gathering place for skaters in the area. The community is now at a place where they are looking to raise funds to purchase land for the new home of skateboarding in Uganda, so that they can buy enough land to have a store and an office as well as a new skatepark.
Learn more here: https://donorbox.org/fundraiser-to-buy-land-for-the-next-skatepark-in-uganda

The true unit of measurement in skateboarding is heart and not skill. Skateboarding doesn’t require skill to begin with, but it demands heart from day one.

The people who gain most from skating are those to whom it means most, and you will go a long way before you find more pure skateboarding passion than within our main man Gose Gerald and the Ugandan Skateboarding Society.

This episode of Skate Tales sees Latvian pro skater extraordinaire and man of the people Madars Apse enlist Tyler Surrey to go and meet the skate crew who built their own unique park from plans off the internet, and then started to create their own moves!

One magic facet of skateboarding is that it adapts to the environment in which it finds itself- from the downhills of Brazil to the built environment of Japanese cities.

In Uganda, Madars finds the local skate crew ripping their own mini-mega ramp doing tricks with both no name and many - and learns from rulers like Rashid Sserunjogi, Travor Kanyike, Shanitah Blessings and Brian Bukenya what skateboarding has offered them and their hopes for where it may yet take them.

Heart is the engine room of the whole skate game, and this episode has it in a big way.

Enjoy, and give them a follow for more!

Meet One Of The Pioneers Of Street Skateboarding Mike Vallely | SKATE TALES S2 Ep 6

In truth, we probably haven’t got enough bandwidth to do the twists and turns of Mike Vallely’s skateboarding life story justice- so let us perhaps instead consider some of the many roles he has played in order to provide some context as to what makes him such an enduring enigma.

There are worse places to start charting his cultural ascent within skateboarding than his breakout section from Powell Peralta’s game-changing 1988 video release Public Domain. Skateboarding was changing daily at that point with the genesis of street skating and Mike V’s East Coast aesthetic and floppy- wristed silhouette caught the attention of an entire skateboarding world that had realised that there was more to this culture than hero-worshipping the MTV- generation of sleeveless T-shirted Californian vert professionals who were appearing more dated and anachronistic by the day.

His double-kick Barnyard board for World Industries effectively signalled a new era in skateboarding trick development which Salman Agah would later pioneer and effectively treble the skateboarding trick lexicon by adding nollie and switchstance possibilities to every trick hitherto utilising the ollie alone.

Despite being on a tangent to what the skateboarding mainstream was doing, Vallely was still an enticing prospect to sponsors precisely because he has always had his own constituency within skateboarding: 120,000 Mexicans turned out to watch him put on a one-man skate demo in 2008.

Accordingly, he would ride for brands like Powell, Black Label and Element Skateboards when each of those brands were at the peak of their powers before finally starting his own Street Plant label in 2015 while somehow finding time along the way to front the re-formed punk band Black Flag and have stints in both semi- professional wrestling and ice hockey.

Now settled with his family in Des Moines, Iowa he has enjoyed a 35-year pro skating career on his own terms. There are no other Mike Vallely’s.

Madars Apse hits the streets with a true original to learn about Street Plant, punk rock and the journey of a street scoundrel from New Jersey.

Punta Roca: The Newest Addition to the WSL World Tour

El Salvador is the latest country to join the WSL Championship Tour with fabled Punta Roca a welcome addition to this year’s roster. For those unfamiliar, Punta Roca is a world class, cobblestone-lined point break that has surfers flocking from all corners of the globe to sink their teeth into its long, running rights. The bath-water-warm waves serve up everything from tubes to long walls and punchy air sections; providing tour surfers with everything they could desire in a competition venue. Ace lensman Scotty Hammonds was in town to capture all of the freesurfing that happened before, after and in and around the contest as the world’s best surfers rolled into tropical Central America and lit up Punta Roca like never before.

In our edit above point break specialist Jordy Smith kicks things off in the heat with some trademark flare before Kanoa Igarashi and Ethan Ewing join the party. Wildcard Josh Burke, rookie sensation Callum Robson and resurgent South African Matty McGillivray find the conditions to their liking, before Carissa Moore plays a starring role and Gabriela Bryan comes out swinging.

Surprise packet Jackson Baker enters the fray, then Jack Robinson makes a surprise entrance at the 2:20 mark which nobody saw coming. Brisa Hennessy flies the flag for the home team, and Caroline Marks makes a very welcome return to the Championship Tour fold as the waves continue to pump. Speaking of returns, Yago Dora is back to remind us all of his much-missed style and grace. Griffin Colapinto stands up and throws down, showing the form that eventually led him to the top of the podium, Italo Ferreira reminds us he has world title to his name in waves similar to his Brazilian hometown,

Punta Roca was a fun new location, and this is the best of the action. Grab your popcorn and settle in for five minutes of El Salvadorian shredding… enjoy.

The City Surf Project | In Plain Sight

Within the San Francisco city limits, the beach is never more than 7 miles away. But still, more than 80% of the local youth population has never been in the ocean. The City Surf Project aims to change that, and for the last decade they've made it their mission to introduce surfing to a new generation of wave riders all over the Bay Area.

To read more on the City Surf Project and to support the organization directly, check out an interview with student turned alumni instructor Josh Salmon: https://www.redbull.com/us-en/city-surf-project

The Story Of Double-Amputee Pro Skater Felipe Nunes | SKATE TALES S2 Ep 4

Felipe Nunes is a 22-year old skater from Curitiba in Brazil. Aged just six, he lost both legs while playing on train tracks.

After five years in a wheelchair, he was given a longboard to get around on. That longboard would become a skateboard- and the rest is history. In a short space of time he was competing in and winning contests against all-comers within his native Brazil.

People began to notice just how talented he really was. Aged eighteen, Felipe felt ready to make it beyond Brazil and started a social media fund to enter Tampa Am. Tony Hawk championed his cause, and Felipe was headed to Florida.

Incredibly, he made the Semi’s, and finished 21st overall as the only adaptive skater in the contest! Felipe had the skateboarding world’s attention, and soon joined Tony’s brand Birdhouse Skateboards.
In 2019, he scored the cover of Thrasher magazine and did The Loop, second go.

Now pro for Birdhouse Skateboards, his career has gone from strength to strength.

Skate Tales is all about the skateboarding stories you don’t hear- as the man himself says: no excuses!

What's up

Italo Ferreira, Caroline Marks, Kanoa Igarashi & crew in South Africa | World Championship Tour Jeffreys Bay in South Africa has long been one of the most fabled stops in surfing. If J-Bay was a tennis court it would be a grand slam, if it was golf a course it would be a major. Whether you’re a fan of competition, or simply a surfing purist who is passionate about point break perfection, Jeffreys has all you could want and more, with a little bit of magic dust sprinkled over the top for good measure. In July 2022 J-Bay was on its best behaviour when the world’s elite surfers rolled into town, and the event and the free surfing that surrounded it were as good as it gets. As the Indian Ocean came alive, and Ethan Ewing silently went about his business en route to a maiden Championship Tour victory and Tati Weston-Webb claimed a maiden female goofy victory for the women, our man Scotty Hammonds was on the sands of the Eastern Cape capturing the pick of the action. From Jordy Smith putting on a masterclass in his home waters to Carissa Moore showing why she’s considered the the best lady to ever paddle into a wave at Supertubes, this edit has a little bit of everything. Stephanie Gilmore and Kelly Slater demonstrate what years of experience look like in picture postcard waves, while Kanoa Igarashi, Griffin Colapinto, Jack Robinson, Caroline Marks, Yago Dora and Italo Ferreira all put on virtuoso performances. Keep an eye out for young guns Molly Picklum and Crosby Colapinto too, as they show us once more why their days will come in the not-too-distant future. At day’s end however there can only be one star and that’s the waves themselves. Take a bow, J-Bay, and we’ll see you again next year!

Gustavo Ribeiro, Angelo Caro, Leandre Sanders & crew in Portugal | Red Bull Lisbon Conquest Red Bull Lisbon Conquest is the second instalment of our touring weekend-long skateboard extravaganzas paying homage to the skate culture of great cities around the globe. Each one of our Red Bull Conquest events features as its centrepiece a free weekend skate contest held on replicas of some of the host city’s most iconic skate spots, in a head-to-head eliminator format which crowns a new king and queen of each stop in a city-centre showdown which brings together the best local and international skateboarding talent. As with last year’s awesome Red Bull Paris Conquest, however, there is much more to our weekend celebration than just the contest itself. We throw ourselves into the life of the city itself for the short period in which the event is in town- and Lisbon was no different. From street missions to sampling local delicacies, checking in with local skate shops to find out what’s new in their city and kicking it with the guest skaters who have flown in from around the world to add their energy to the party mix, the rev’s are guaranteed to be high throughout. Red Bull Conquest is unique among skate contests in that the format is one-on-one sudden death knockout, with judges Ricardo Fonseca, Thaynan Costa, Louisa Menke, Anthony Claravall and Dani Lebron each choosing winners based on overall rider impression within each 3- minute jam rather than scoring trick tallies. The rider with most votes after each bout progresses to the next knockout round. Simple, and exciting! Madars Apse was kind enough to be our roving reporter on the ground in Lisbon at the start of July for three days of sun- kissed skate vibes from the Portuguese capital. Find out What Went Down right here!
