Kilian Martin Freestyle Skating In Madrid | SKATE TALES S2 Ep 2

Who ever heard of a Spanish freestyle pro in the 2020’s?

Kilian Martin hails from the Alcorcon neighbourhood in Madrid, Spain. Not long after he began his skating journey, Kilian discovered Powell Peralta’s legendary ‘Ban This’ video, which introduced him to freestyle skating.

Freestyle was something with which Kilian could combine his gymnastic abilities, allowing him to get creative and do things that had never been done before. Spotted skating in Barcelona, Kilian was asked to fly to Paris for a fashion magazine shoot. Overnight, he became a skate sensation in the advertising world, filming dozens of commercials for some of the biggest names in luxury retail.

In 2010, his life took another twist when he won the Freestyle Skateboarding World Cup in Germany and met Brett Novak, sparking a series of hugely successful and uniquely cinematic viral skate videos which established Kilian’s talent in the US.

With the backing of his childhood idols from Powell Peralta and Vision, Kilian moved to the USA where he currently resides as a professional skater shooting ads for some of the biggest brands in the world.

Kilian Martin took skateboarding’s most unfashionable genre and became a sensation in the commercial world outside of the skate industry’s reach.

He is a self-made pro skater with an internet following measured in the millions. With a story like that, there was no way he wasn’t going to feature in Madars’ quest to explore skateboarding’s roads less travelled.

Experience Native American Skate Culture With Apache Skateboards | SKATE TALES S2 Ep 3

Douglas Miles Junior is one of the scions of a new wave of indigenous skaters fusing their roots in native American culture with the modern movement of skateboarding.

Born and raised in Arizona´s San Carlos Apache Reservation, he was introduced to skateboarding by his father, the acclaimed fine artist Douglas Miles Sr.

Doug Sr. had started painting on skateboards as a medium and given the groundswell of interest this created, he founded Apache Skateboards, a brand in which the Apache community could recognise a connection to their own culture within this relatively new form of expression.

As a marginalised and often overlooked people, Native Americans have proven incredibly resourceful in developing and nurturing new iterations of their ancient culture, and Doug Junior spent his formative skating years touring other indigenous reservations teaching Native American youngsters how they could become drawn into skate culture without losing sight of their own heritage.

Sometimes, when you can’t find space for your own chapter, you have to re-write the book.

The World’s Go Coast To Coast Down Under

The Australian leg of the WSL Championship Tour scored a little bit of everything this in 2022. From pumping waves at Bells Beach and Winkipop in Victoria to heaving Margaret River and The Box when they ventured to Western Australia, there was no shortage of waves or wild action when the world’s best surfers hit town.

Jordy Smith openings up proceedings in the West before Leo Fioravanti charges out of the gates at heaving Box, supported by an all-star cast; take a bow Kelly Slater, Molly Picklum, Nathan Florence, Jack Robinson, Kolohe Andino, John John Florence, Griffin Colapinto, Ethan Ewing, Imai Devault and Betty Lou Sakura Johnson.

In early 2021, we convinced Kolohe Andino to come sit down with us and our cameras. We met him at a neutral location with little provided detail of what we wanted to talk about. It was instantly clear that with competition on the WSL Championship Tour on hold, Kolohe had taken advantage of the downtime and used it to mature into a more thoughtful, creative, and dynamic surfer and human.

In one of the first signs of his newfound maturity, he showed up on time with panache, style and an entirely new tone. He was enthusiastic. Earnest. Even charming and funny. And excited to convey the things that were firing him up about life and surfing. Not exactly what we were expecting. But a welcome surprise. Looking back at this interview, it's clear we caught him at a pivotal moment in time.
