Highlights: Day 1 of the Air Tahiti Rangiroa Pro

Avatoru showed up in a brilliant way to kick off proceedings at the Air Tahiti Rangiroa Pro QS 1,000 with nonstop barrels. Kalanoweo DeSoto, Oliver Zietz, and Luke Tema answered the calling along with Tahiti's own Enrique Ariitu finding themselves in the excellent range. Heavy upsets also ensued with Challenger Series qualification hopefuls narrowing and everything left to surf for as the Round of 16 and a potential Finals Day awaits.

Backdoor Shootout Day 2 Highlights: Diamonds in the Rough at Pipeline.

Before a contest at Pipeline, it’s common for surfers to paddle out in the dark, eager to prove themselves worthy of competing in the main event.

But today, only two people were in the lineup. That alone was telling, as yesterday’s massive 20-second-interval swell lingered through the night. By 9 a.m., no one seemed eager to paddle out.

Contest organizer Eddie Rothman said, “I don’t see anything rideable.”

Billy Kemper countered, “Run it.”

A few other chargers agreed. Still, it was the kind of day that left many happy to stay onshore, watching from the safety of the sand. There were brief glimpses of good waves, particularly during A New Earth Project’s heat, but as forecasted, the southwest wind eventually arrived, blowing Pipe to smithereens.

Even so, Parker Coffin found moments of opportunity in the messy lineup for Snapt 5, and the North Shore Boys managed to bag a few scores as well.

At this point, any team could take the win. All we need is for the swell to settle down.

Fog Delay To Epic Day | Rip Curl USA GromSearch National Final | Surf Ranch Highlights

From fog delay... to epic day. ⁠Last year the Rip Curl USA GromSearch National Final held at the Surf Ranch was called off due to heavy fog covering the entire pool. ⁠

The top groms from across the country were welcomed back for an epic day of perfect waves to make up for it. ⁠

The 2023 Rip Curl GromSearch series is on the home stretch towards the desert, after crowning our GromSearch regional champions throughout the season at qualifying stops in California, Hawaii, and Florida. The athletes who have earned the distinction of competing in the National Final have their sights set on Palm Springs, and the inaugural surf competition at the newly minted Palm Springs Surf Club. The top four surfers from each of the three qualifying stops, will be joined by four more wildcards, and battle it out in a quest to become the Rip Curl GromSearch National Champion.
