SILVER LININGS starring Jordy Smith | Episode 5 | O'Neill

"When I woke up the next morning and realized I had to get surgery, everything kind of sunk in." - Jordy Smith.

With the realization that something wasn’t right and the subsequent diagnosis of a grade 3 torn LCL requiring immediate reconstructive surgery, Jordy’s year quickly flipped upside down. Unable to continue the World Championship Tour, his position in the world title race was compromised, and competing in the 2020 Olympics was no longer a reality. But Jordy being Jordy, focused on the challenge of rehab and getting back in the water.

Episode 5 is a unique insight into what it takes to be a world-class athlete and two action sequences that are evidence that Jordy is back and ready for 2022.

GAP YEAR ft JORDY TURANSKY

Born and raised in Cronulla, Jordy Turansky follows in a long line of iconic Southside surfers. Legends such as Occy, Greeny, Matt Griggs, Richard Dog Marsh, or current WSL tearaway Connor O’Leary and hard-charging Kipp Caddy. The area has always been synonymous with great surfers and big wave chargers.

Jordy seems to be fitting into both sides of the equation.

Small in stature, but going big where it counts, Jordy has been sharpening his game on waves of consequence in and around his local reefs now for a few years. To consider he didn’t start surfing until he was 12, is a pretty impressive feat. 6 years in and he’s swinging on waves that most of us will never even want to look at. Currently 18 yrs old, he was to finish his HSC school year at the end of 20, planned on going to Indo and Hawaii in 2021, but COVID and travel restrictions re-routed his strike mission to local shores.

So he packed up his swag, his boards and wettys and headed out into the unknown with Kipp Caddy, (surfer) Sam Venn ( photog) Cameron Staunton ( filmmaker). From southern NSW, Victoria, South Oz, comes GAP YEAR.
Countless hours in the car, near-death wipeouts at remote reefs and plenty of good times with good friends.

Jordy has a large future ahead and we salute those who get up, get going and get amongst it.

Silver Linings Episode 4 – DURBAN

Every surfer has a home break that has shaped their surfing. For @JordySmith88, without Durban, he wouldn't be the progressive surfer he is today. It is no doubt that Durban’s punchy beach breaks and rip bowls are responsible for the versatile and high-performance surfing Jordy has done throughout his surfing career. Not to mention, when Durban turns on and the sandbars make up the freight train running right-hand barrels, you know Jordy will be out there hunting down the wave of the day.

Unfortunately for Jordy, (what he thought was) the wave of the day ended up costing him a serious knee injury which would later force him to pull out from the Olympics and the 2021 World Title Race. Stay tuned for Episode 5 to follow along through Jordy's recovery.

BLACK YETI'S UPDATE ON NIMBUS SURF HERO

Black Yeti is ready to dive into the Mediterranean Sea for the first-ever surf event of the World Rookie Tour: the Nimbus Surf Hero organized by @nimbussurfingclub in Tuscany, Italy.
120 young surfers under 18 already pre-registered for the event 🔥
The event will be host in the legendary Pontile (Pier) of Forte dei Marmi, where the most of italian surf events were held from the ’70s while party and event headquarters will be based at Nimbus Sailing Center in Marina di Pietrasanta.
The event is powered by @oneilleurope @oneillwetsuits @visitforte and of course energized by our long term partner @redbullsurfing
Surfing events are held within the waiting period, which offers ample time to wait for the right conditions for surfers to compete.

Scoring Heavy Waves with Eli Olson, Brett Barley, and Torrey Meister in Episode 7 of Strike Missions O’Neill Strike Missions is a film series documenting Team O'Neill’s surf adventures across the globe. It’s all about tracking swell and striking when the time is right, hoping the gamble pays off and the risk is worth the reward. In the end, the journey is often as memorable as the destination. The small, coastal cities of Mainland Mexico are home to some of the best beach breaks in the globe, where proper south swells produce heavy, hollow, thumping waves.
