The Best Surfing I've Ever Seen: Kolohe Andino, Cola Bros, Ian Crane, Luke Davis in Mentawais (2020) Nate Lawrence has been capturing the world’s best surfers for 25 years. In that time, he’s witnessed a lot — some things he can share, others might land a few people in jail. But when asked what’s the best surfing he’s seen over this quarter-century, Nate narrowed it down to two trips: Japan in 2011 (filming for Dear Suburbia) and a plague-induced empty Mentawais trip in 2020 (filming for Reckless Isolation). Two trips full of 8-hour sessions, god-tier surf, and an elite cast of surfers in their mental, physical, and sexual primes. After pondering a bit, Nate went with the San Clemente crew (Kolohe Andino, Griffin Colapinto, Crosby Colapinto Luke Davis, and Ian Crane) in Indo over Kai Neville’s extraordinary band of misfits (Dane Reynolds, John Florence, Yadin Nicol, Conner Coffin, and Dillon Perillo) in the land of the rising sun. Ian Crane, Noah Wegrich, Soli Bailey and Laura Crane (eventually) find rugged redemption The underlying theme of any surf trip is optimism. There are empty perfect waves out there, just a matter of getting to ‘em at the right time. This most recent Maps to Nowhere adventure — featuring Ian Crane, Noah Wegrich, Soli Bailey and Laura Crane exploring a rugged, cold and unpredictable stretch of coast — embodied that spirit. How rugged? “It’s in our DNA: don’t go to the water,” local guide explained. “That’s where you go to work or go to die. It’s raw and brutal up here — and not friendly for ocean activities.” Thing is, this crew was here looking for exactly that. And after a few skunks, hours and hours in the car, rain, wind and swells that wouldn’t play nice, they found empty, reasonably perfect waves. Not 10-foot slabs, but the kind of fun that most surfers hop on a plane for. As British surfer Laura Crane said a couple days into the trip, “You can only be as stoked as what’s in front of you.” Which, in this case, turned out to be more than enough. The Dane Reynolds Tag Team Challenge At Empty Rincon Welcome to Episode 3 of the Surf100 Challenge Series Presented by Pacifico, the third round in our $100,000 title fight. Last week, we lost our second surfer — Mateus Herdy — by a Pringle-thin margin at the hands of Cam Richards (and burly Blacks Beach). With Mateus and Noah Beschen gone, only six surfers remain in contention for the final $100k prize: Jacob Willcox, Ian Crane, Rasta Robb, Eithan Osborne, Cam Richards, and Sebastian Williams. Now, let’s reveal the third challenge: Surf100’s first and only team challenge, with a mutinous twist. Episode Three: Dumpster Diver Tag Team: Six surfers compete in a 2 v. 2 v. 2 tag-team match-up. Each surfer can catch up to three waves in their round, but only the wave they claim is scored out of 100. Once a surfer claims a wave, the head to the beach and tag in their next teammate. The second teammate must surf and claim their wave before 30 minutes are up. Each team’s two claimed waves are combined to form their heat total. The team with the highest heat total in Round 1 is safe — the other two teams go to Round 2, where the process repeats. The team that loses Round 2 will then be split in Round 3 and have to surf against one another to decide who goes home.
