Australian Athletes Dominate Final Day of X Games; 52,000 Attend Inaugural Event

In front of a packed house for the final day of the inaugural X Games Sydney 2018, Australian athletes gave their hometown crowd reason to cheer. Australian athletes took home 10 medals, three of them being gold, the most of any country. Ryan Williams of the Sunshine Coast kicked off the day winning his first X Games medal with gold in the BMX Big Air competition. On the Moto X side, Jarryd McNeil and Corey Creed continued the Aussie dominance with Best Whip gold and silver medals. With five of the eight riders in the Moto X Best Trick final hailing from Australia, Rob Adelberg and Josh Sheehan claimed gold and bronze respectively with frontflip and double backflip variations. Skateboarder Shane O’neill made sure the Men’s Skateboard Street competition had an Aussie on the podium as well, winning bronze.

Best known for throwing scooter tricks on the Nitro Circus tour, Ryan Williams showed he’s not just a one-trick pony. Adding BMX riding in recent years, Williams quickly learned his way around the bike and lands some of the most creative tricks in the discipline. Williams proved his BMX prowess by landing a nothing front bikeflip over the gap, to a frontflip flair at 11-feet, 3-inches to best the two-time defending champ James Foster. Mykel rounded out the podium winning his second Big Air bronze.
In the Moto X Best Whip competition, Yarrawonga native Jarryd McNeil successfully defended his Minneapolis gold. McNeil became the most-winningest Australian athlete in X Games history with seven gold medals.

After heavy rains threatened to compromise the Moto X course, Benalla-native Rob Adelberg took home gold in Moto X Best Trick with a no handed front flip, followed closely by Freestyle gold medalist Tom Pages and Donnybrook-native, Josh Sheehan. Pages and Sheehan both took home their second medals of X Games Sydney, marking seven of the last nine Best Trick medals going to Aussies.

X Games Minneapolis gold medalist Nyjah Huston defended his title, throwing down a winning run his first try, only to raise his score slightly on a victory lap for run three. Including tricks like a blunt kickflip to fakie and a nollie heel flip to backside lip slide to fakie, he outscored Brazilian and X Games Minneapolis bronze medalist Kelvin Hoefler (92.66) and Melbourne-native Shane O’Neill (92.00).
