Catching up with Dane Reynolds In our current issue’s “Endless Joy,” author Tony John Andrews explores how the once elusive Dane Reynolds has become more accessible than ever before. “A different Dane has begun appearing with greater frequency in the surf media,” he writes, “more candid and at ease, denouncing his old self as ‘a brat.’ I wanted to know what had changed, and how, as well as to fill in the gaps of his story. I wanted to understand the secret behind his mystique—was it constructed or authentic? Both? Neither? I wanted to know if he regretted quitting the tour, turning down many millions more in sponsorship deals, and never winning the world title to which his talent so obviously entitled him. I wanted to know where he was going, what was left, and how he felt about it all.” In this short film companion to the print piece, Reynolds explains the aesthetics and impetus of his surf filmography, favorite wave, and fatherhood, followed by a Marine Layer Productions and Chapter 11 montage. Cliff Kapono and Bryce Baker do Southern Japan “Without intel, a guide, or any real sense of whether there will be rideable waves,” Cliff Kapono writes in the issue, “we receive only one concrete piece of information prior to our departure from Hawaii: Make sure to ‘check in’ when we land in Japan. Between organizing a crew, filmer, tickets, and forecasting, it isn’t until we’re half-way between Honolulu and Narita that I find myself remembering this piece of insight—and start wondering what it means.” Deciphering this singular piece of advice leads Kapono, Bryce Baker, and photographer U-Ske on an unforgettable surf trip.
