One of surfing’s most candid voices and unforgettable talents goes on the record with our managing editor Whitman Bedwell in our current issue’s “What Do You Think of Bobby Martinez Now?” “I’m proud of what I’ve done,” says Martinez in TSJ 34.2, “but I have a hard time patting myself on the back, like, ‘I’m a good surfer.’ Because it doesn’t even matter. Being a good surfer doesn’t make you a good person. Or a happy person. And I feel like I was able to figure that out and chase what’s important to me. Longboarder Seitaro Nakamura in “Nothing More. Nothing Less.” As a teenager, Japanese logger Seitaro Nakamura moved to Southern California to attend high school and surf with his influences—Kevin Connelly, Belén Alvarez Kimble, and Joel Tudor. His minimal style was on display in many longboarding films in the late-’90s. In TSJ 34.2’s “Nothing More. Nothing Less,” photographer/filmmaker/writer Tatsuo Takei tracks Nakamura’s life and career. This film is a companion to the print feature. “Seitaro and I began meeting to shoot,” writes director Tatsuo Takei. “To sidestep the crowds, we maintained a meticulous schedule. We avoided national holidays, Saturdays, Sundays, and even weekday mornings. We also waited for exactly the right swell, tide, and wind. It was like a stakeout. On one occasion, we waited in the car for five hours for the conditions to line up for a 45-minute session. On another, we waited for the final game of the World Baseball Classic to start, knowing that everyone else would be watching Japan face the United States instead of surfing. We scored perfect longboarding waves. (And we watched the game afterward. Japan won.) We also spent some time in northern Japan, enjoying the quiet atmosphere and beautiful waves of the countryside surf communities.” Pick up a copy of TSJ 34.2 to read “Nothing More. An Assemblage of Bones with Jaleesa Vincent In TSJ’s 29.5’s “An Assemblage of Bones,” writer Mariah Ernst follows 21-year-old Jaleesa Vincent’s transition from Sunshine Coast lifeguard to Byron Bay-based professional freesurfer. Aside from drawing unique lines on alt-crafts, Jaleesa’s extraneous endeavors include rock and roll, tap dancing (sometimes those first two simultaneously), painting, and skeletal articulation. This short film focuses on that latter hobby. Vincent narrates her process of collecting road kill, using beetles to clean its bones, and then putting its skeleton back together again.
