Anna Gudauskas (neé Ehrgott) spent the first part of her life chasing waves to remote corners of Earth, often solo. Tom Curren at Bawa on the Fireball Fish TSJ 34.3’s “Fish Bowl” tracks the wave’s 20-year-run. Watch The Search session that put it on the map, again. In our current issue, author Ben Mondy traces early tracks at the Indonesian island of Bawa to a group of British and Irish surfers who started surfing there in 1989. Five years later, the wave was pushed into the limelight by Tom Curren’s deft performance in bigger surf on a 5'7" Tommy Peterson Fireball Fish. In 2005, an earthquake permanently altered the wave’s shape. One of surfing’s most candid voices and unforgettable talents goes on the record with our managing editor Whitman Bedwell in our current issue’s “What Do You Think of Bobby Martinez Now?” “I’m proud of what I’ve done,” says Martinez in TSJ 34.2, “but I have a hard time patting myself on the back, like, ‘I’m a good surfer.’ Because it doesn’t even matter. Being a good surfer doesn’t make you a good person. Or a happy person. And I feel like I was able to figure that out and chase what’s important to me.
