OF SALT & DUST Orange County-based surfer JJ Wessels is a Renaissance man of sorts, relentlessly hustling across a wide variety of artistic and commercial pursuits. Of Salt and Dust takes a candid look into what drives them, including the life-altering setbacks Wessels feels has molded his surfing and work, and continues to inspire his output. As you’ll see, Wessels’ multifaceted talent on waves runs parallel to his mixed-media endeavors in art and photography.

The Full Point: Jeffreys Bay with Grant "Twiggy" Baker and friends. While Grant Baker is best known for his heavy-water exploits, he's more than capable in surf of any size. And it's a widely known secret that he's probably the last person you'd want to share a lineup with—he will find himself better positioned for every single good wave you'd even think you'd want. Fortunately, as this clip displays, a solid swell at J-Bay provides offers up enough opportunities for the rest of the pack to enjoy a set wave across the point. The Surfer's Journal is a reader-supported publication. Subscribe to the magazine here:

Convergences: At home with Neal Purchase Jr. In a conversation with Andrew Kidman, Neal Purchase Jr. cites influences on his surfing and shaping that range from Marvin Foster to Wayne Deane and Poppa Purchase to Chappy Jennings. That interview is available in the print edition of TSJ 23.6. Consider the clip here a brief look at where Purchase’s surf-related curiosities merge. Never mind the low-lying swell. The quads and 2+1s ridden are self-shaped—and the sounds provided are self-scored. To read the full interview, along with everything else in our archive and delivery of each new issue, subscribe to the magazine here:
