Cliff Kapono and Bryce Baker do Southern Japan “Without intel, a guide, or any real sense of whether there will be rideable waves,” Cliff Kapono writes in the issue, “we receive only one concrete piece of information prior to our departure from Hawaii: Make sure to ‘check in’ when we land in Japan. Between organizing a crew, filmer, tickets, and forecasting, it isn’t until we’re half-way between Honolulu and Narita that I find myself remembering this piece of insight—and start wondering what it means.” Deciphering this singular piece of advice leads Kapono, Bryce Baker, and photographer U-Ske on an unforgettable surf trip. A Mashup of Dylan Graves’ Weird Waves In TSJ 34.4, Dylan Graves riffs about isolated surf cultures, weird wave criteria, and his motivation to keep searching. This short is a highlight reel from a decade on the hunt. “With perfect waves, people can be secretive,” Graves says, “which I totally understand. But with novelty waves, it’s almost like they want to share them and have other people check them out. It just became an easy way to connect with people in these places I was going to, which then opened up the full experience of wherever that was. I got kind of obsessed with seeking that out, as opposed to just trying to get barreled every single day of my life.” (As you’ll see in the highlight reel above, his novelty quest still yields plenty of tube time.)
