RINCON CLASSIC IS ON THIS WEEKEND JAN 15-16

With a series of west swells hitting the coast for the first time in the 2021-22 winter season it is a bird in the hand to run the event on the first waiting weekend of January 15 and 16 with head high plus surf conditions predicted to light up the Queen of the coast. The event will be run in the cove with limited parking available. Shuttles will be running from Mark Avenue to Rincon from 8am-5:30 pm daily courtesy of Jump On The School Bus.

Heat draw and schedule is up on rinconclassic.com. There will be a live webcast as well! Link will be in the bio at @cisurfboards through the weekend. @cisurfboards are really stoked to support this community event every year, and for its 40th Anniversary contestants will receive this epic tee with a Cove image of Tom Curren shot by @jimmymetyko.gallery.

Surfer on poster is @jabe_swierkocki and also shot by @jimmymetyko.gallery

Thanks to Chris Keet and his @surfhappens crew for doing all the on-site work and organizing to make this a success each year.

Stab In The Dark: Mick Fanning Tracks His Stats

Mick’s choice for this year’s #stabinthedark winning board wasn’t based on top speed or length of ride, nor should it have been.

There’s no stats associated with how a board ‘feels’ underfoot and that’s fine with us.

In saying that, this year Mick Fanning wore his Rip Curl #searchGPS Surf Watch 2 and on reflecting, it is fascinating to discover just how fast the White Lightning strikes on each of these tricked up surfboards.

Then there’s paddle distance, number of waves surfed and even how far he paddled on each board, numbers that wouldn’t bear much influence on the subjective study’s outcome, but interesting trivial facts regardless.

With the feature still on its premiere tour (more dates incoming), we’ll save the rest of our collected data for later.

PROJECT WIDE: mexico

“There’s nothing more enjoyable than a surf trip to some right points with a crew of friends,” explains Tanner Gudauskas in reference to his edit that features Channel Islands Surfboards all-new groveler model—the Rocket Wide. “Our Project Wide short film mostly celebrates the lighter side of surfing, with me, my brother Dane and Nathaniel Curren in some cruisy Mexican point breaks riding the Rocket Wide we helped design with CI shaper Mike Andrews. I even brought along my 16 mm Bolex to shoot some of the fun as well.”

What’s in Conner’s Board Bag? … ULUWATU Edition

It takes hard work for world tour surfers like Conner Coffin to dial in a surfboard quiver they’re confident will result in heat wins. In this Channel Islands Surfboards series, follow Conner to each world tour stop—as well as some free surf adventures in between—and gain insight into which CI board he pulls out of his travel bag for that particular break, and learn why.

Uluwatu, Bali is a unique left-hander on the tour schedule and Conner's choice to address it was seemingly unexpected—calling upon a trusted design: the Proton. Roughly a decade ago, this model (inspired by Dane Reynolds), was considered to be ahead of its time and quickly became the state-of-the-art performance board that earned CI teamriders countless tour victories. While other models such as the Fever have since become the team’s go-to board on tour, Conner decided to pull out this favorite he’d used countless time before on more powerful waves like Ulus, as well as in the Hawaiian Islands. And as you’ll see it went very well—earning him some convincing heat wins and standout turns along the way. Although not currently a design you’ll find at your local shop, the Proton can still be ordered custom through the Custom Boardbuilder at cisurfboards.com.

CONNER COFFIN Scores Late Season South Swell

Just before heading to Hawaii to compete in the triple crown, Conner Coffin scored a nice little run of south swell not far from his home. With the punchy head high conditions, Conner opted for his go-to-shortboard: 5'11 x 18 1/2 x 2 5/16 FEVER

Alex Gray Lights Up Lowers On A Rocket 9

Alex Gray dodges some Lower Trestles traffic, during a nice little run of south swell a few months back...

Riding a 5'6 1/2 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4 25.1L ROCKET 9

"The Rocket9 outline has the wide point forward a bit and the tail is pulled in making it super snappy and maneuverable. The swallow gives a great fast release as well. One of the major desires for this board was I wanted was to go fast and then turn hard when I wanted in waves ranging from super average California beach breaks all the way to grinding little tubes. It’s one of the most versatile boards I have ever ridden." - Dane Gudauskas

Meet Lenny: Australia’s Next Big Thing Lennix Smith is Australia’s hottest up and coming youngster. He lives in Barrack Point, a quaint coastal town on the southern coast of Australia. Lennix charges and has a very well-rounded repertoire for being only 16, as seen in his recent edit “Not Lenny" on @stab. Lennix currently trains with Matt Griggs, a former professional tour surfer and coach of Mick Fanning. Now in year 11 at school, his main goal is to be on the CT and keep exploring South Australia to get some proper barrels. He now adds his Tweed Pro win to his list of major accomplishments that include 2x Australian Titles and The Occy Grom Comp Champion. We expect we’ll see a lot more great things to come from this rising star in the coming months and years ahead. Video shot by Ben Bagley from Lago films.

Australia's Jordy Lawler — Baja Trippin' Narrabeen's favorite son, and Sydney Pro champ, Jordy Lawler, headed over the U.S. Mainland to sharpen up his CI quiver and his surfing a few weeks ahead of the WSL's Challenger Series kick off at the U.S. Open. After spending some time at our factory working on his comp quiver with Britt, he headed south of the border to test ride and then pick out his favorites for the Series. The work on his boards and his surfing appears to have paid off, as seen by his 5th place finish in Portugal. We're excited to see how he goes in France, and hoping he lands himself a spot on the CT for next Season. Jordy is mostly riding his Two Happy model as well as the OG Flyer. Video by Noah McPherson.
