Surfing - Deus SlidetoberFest 2025 - Day 1 We kicked off where we always should… in the drink. Pererenan Beach, dawn. The sand was cool, the waves were clean, and the only thing louder than the shore break was the hiss of our coffee machine firing up. The Deus circus rolled in before the sun had even thought about clocking on. Tents up, boards lined, beers chilling, speakers humming, the preamble to a perfectly chaotic day. By seven, the first heat was out there, small silhouettes dancing on clean lines. The Deus Slidetober Surf Comp isn’t your run-of-the-mill battle of egos. Here, everyone rides from the same stable: the Deus Quiver: singles, twinnies, thrusters, quads, a mixed bag of beautiful mischief. Contestants drew straws for their board of fate; luck of the draw was part of the thrill. Pererenan was firing. Small barrels spun off the right-handers, and the riders painted arcs and found pockets in the glassy faces. Onshore, Jared Mell and Ambrose McNeill were our twin jesters on the mic - heckling, hyping, and handing out comedy gold between waves. The camaraderie was thick, the heat relentless, and the sand hot enough to make a grown man sprint for shade. When the finals hit, Elliot Reid, Jared Mell, Jordan Griffin, Marc Llewellen all paddled out to put in a solid thirty minutes in the water. Then, with one final hoot, it was over. No grand crescendo, just the slow fade of a great day. The results? We kept them tucked away until Sunday. Some secrets deserve a little suspense. Deus SlidetoberFest Surf Competition After two days behind handlebars, it was nice to have a day at the beach that wasn’t marinated in the smell of Gasoline and constant engine noise. The Deus SlidetoberFest Surf Competition was a much slower, chill event. Perfect for a Sunday morning. Our cavalcade of pitched canvas had followed from yesterday’s site to here overnight, the Deus Café crew arrived early and by 7 am had the grill splattering and the coffee machine doing overtime. People moved about putting the final touches on things while our PA drizzled down a blanket of morning perfect tunes. Forty competitors and perfect head-high waves rolling in on the right at Perenenan. Our tents spilled down the stairs to the beach where we had one set up keeping a quiver of Deus boards out of the sun, each board had the nose spray painted in a different colour, the spin we’d put on this event, rather than people bringing their own boards, they’d spin the bicycle wheel and whatever colour it landed on was the colour of the board they’d ride. You ride ours, eleven boards, all part of the new Deus ‘Always Available’ Quiver. We had on hand a couple of twinnies, three quads, three alternative thrusters, a single fin and a couple of two plus ones. Nothing outlandish but a couple of spicy ones for the assembled to ride. We managed to keep the spinning going all day long, a few tried to grab and get out there, light heartedly pushing and jostling for the more performance models but knuckles were rapped enough times that they settled down. We brushed through the first 8 heats, two going through and laid waste to many. It was great to see the event settle down and people assume a more natural stance of having fun, party waves and high-fiving. The quarters went down under a similar head of steam. The tide began to drop and the wave height suffered as a result. We ploughed through the semi’s and we had an expression session from a few watermen that swam out and gave the body womping a go. The final four paddled into a 40-minute heat. It was a close call between the two of them, they’d been neck and neck with the results remaining a mystery until later that night at the Deus Temple.
