Best Cam Rewinds of 2020

This is usually the time of year for self-reflection — when we reflect on our lives, then plot our next move. But 2020 was no normal year, and it seems like all we’ve been doing for the last nine months is reflecting (mostly on 2019 and how sweet life was when we could surf wherever we wanted), so, at this point most of us are just ready to move forward. And while humankind itself was stunted in this tragic first year in the coronavirus age, the waves kept on pumping… And pumping… And pumping. All over the world. Surfers or no surfers. Shutdowns or no shutdowns. Daylight or no daylight. So, let this 2020 Cam Rewind highlight reel serve as a glorious reminder of why we all surf: because waves equal hope. Life is finite. But waves are forever.

The Best Cam Rewinds of August

A visual recap of swell and storms – as captured by our cams last month.

September already? Dang. Guess all things – even summer – have to come to an end. But at least the last full (official) month of the season in the northern hemisphere came with plenty of swell. There were hurricanes on the east coast, fun swell on the west, a few days of glory south of the border, (nearly) empty lineups in the Pacific, and more, all captured by our cams. So, hit play above and enjoy a visual review of August. Now, who’s ready for fall?

A special finals day crowned Cole Houshmand (USA) and Kirra Pinkerton (USA) the World Surf League (WSL) Live Like Zander Junior Pro In Memory of Zander Venezia its winners at Soup Bowl. The San Clemente, California, sweep earned both Houshmand and Pinkerton their first-ever Pro Junior wins in amazing fashion. Also, Pinkerton’s win moved her up the rankings to No. 2 and clinched a spot into the World Junior Championships over Samantha Sibley (USA). Conditions proved tricky for competitors as Soup Bowl’s shifting peaks continued to surprise, but the best was saved for last.

Che Allan Wins Inaugural Thomo QS1,000 in Memory of Bill Thomson

Barbados' Che Allan brought a Qualifying Series (QS) trophy back to his home island for the first time in a decade after Puerto Rico's Josie Graves won the previous event run at Soup Bowl in 2007. Allan overcame an explosive start from an in-form Chauncey Robinson in the Final of the Thomo QS1000 in Memory of Bill Thomson for his first-ever QS win.

Barbados is a little further out of the archipelago and there is no ferry linking it to the other island, so we had to take our first plane since the beginning of the trip. We headed straight to Bathsheba and found a nice accommodation in front of the famous wave of Soupbowl. The swell was dropping but the Soupbowl was still delivering. We met and surf with local legend Mark Holder and Bruce Mackie. Barbados is the Mecca of the surfing in the lesser antilles and this is why we decided to end the journey there. Here is the last part of Inna Di Caribbean.
