The former WSL World Junior Champion Francisca Veselko is officially on the map as a CT qualification threat with her maiden Challenger Series victory over three-time SURFEST victor and CT veteran Sally Fitzgibbons.

The Burton Automotive Newcastle SURFEST marks the beginning of the 2025 Challenger Series and is the start of the climb towards securing a place on the Championship Tour. Over 120 surfers will make their way to Merewether Beach to vye for a coveted spot on the reimagined 2026 CT. As the first test of the season, it draws both rising talent and proven competitors, all with something to prove. Set in one of Australia’s most iconic surf towns, this event sets the pace, raises the stakes, and defines who’s ready to rise. The Newcastle Surfest will be the first stop on the 2025 World Surf League Challenger Series. Running from 2 June to 8 June, the event will showcase local and international surfers battling head-to-head for a qualifying position.

HIGHLIGHTS Day 1 // EDP Vissla Pro Ericeira presented by Estrella Galicia

The first day of action saw the women making their first moves in their Ericeira campaigns. From Tessa Thyssen beginning to open up the judging scale on Day 1, to Portuguese Francisca Veselko boasting her experience in a familiar lineup close to home, to Zoe Benedetto's excellent showcase in a bout amongst rising stars. The women's Round of 32 is now locked in as we look towards Tuesday, October 3rd where the men will make their debuts at Stop No. 5 on the Challenger Series.

There are just two events left in the battle for Championship Tour qualification. With chances running out, the Challenger Series’ rising stars like Jacob Willcox and Sawyer Lindblad go up against former CT standouts like Sally Fitzgibbons and Frederico Morais to seize their dream. The WSL Challenger Series is the pathway to pro surfing’s highest level. Across the six-event gauntlet, the sport’s most promising talents battle against former CT competitors to become one of the 10 men and five women who qualify for the Championship Tour and earn their place among the world’s best surfers.
