ONSEN FOUNTAIN: Eric Jackson and Shin Biyajima Snowboarding in Myoko, Japan Japanese legend Shin Biyajima grew up riding in Myoko, north of Nagano, Japan. In January 2024, Eric Jackson joined him there for the biggest storm of the season. From resort snowboarding during a three-foot snowfall to backcountry airs to bluebird splitboarding atop an active volcano, it was a full spectrum introduction to the lesser-known zone across the mountains from Hakuba. THE DESERT SESSION - Snowboarding In A Saharan Sand Storm In March 2022, a Saharan storm deposited desert sand over the Alps. Although the phenomenon isn't unusual, in the last few winters it has occurred on a previously unseen scale, a consequence of increasingly frequent extreme weather events caused by climate change. Some of the Nidecker & Flow team - Christoffer Granbom and Shin Biyajima, led by Emilien Badoux - were on hand in the Swiss Alps to ride the unique snow, splitboarding to the Cabane du Trient and descending an east-facing couloir on the Pointe d'Orny. Although the vibes were high, all involved were once again reminded throughout of the damage caused by the climate catastrophe. For episode two of The Instinct Diaries we take a closer look at the life of Shin Biyajima, Nagano native and master of lines around his Honshu home. Slowing down last year meant having the time to fulfil a long-held dream and build his own 'Tiny House' - a version of friend and teammate Mike Basich's Dream Chaser, adapted for the Japanese roads. From his base and from the road, Shin scored over and over again last winter, racking up lines in both quantity and quality.
