Monday, August 5, 2019
After four days of non-stop action, X Games Minneapolis 2019 came to an end on Sunday evening with finals in Women’s Skateboard Street, Wendy’s Men’s Skateboard Park, Harley-Davidson Hooligan Racing, newly added Skateboard Street Best Trick and Dave Mirra’s BMX Park Best Trick.

The morning began with a repeat gold medal performance from Harley-Davidson Hooligan Racing athlete Daniel Mischler. With 48 racers lined up this morning, Mischler edged out Tony Alves and Kole King for the top spot.

At the first Skateboard Street Best Trick contest at X Games since 2003, it was Nyjah Huston who took gold with a cab flip back lip into a fakie 360 kickflip. Huston, who just missed the top spot in yesterday’s Monster Energy Men’s Skateboard Street competition, was not planning to compete in the discipline today and told the crowd he made it all the way to the airport before having a moment of clarity that he needed to come back and compete in Best Trick.

In an ultra competitive final, Italian Ivan Federico surprised all and took home gold, his first medal ever at X Games. Federico’s run included a backside kickflip lien to backside disaster on top of the extension, backside kickflip spine transfer, huge 540s, a noseblunt on the banked wall and a sugarcane on the extension. After missing the podium at Men’s Skateboard Street yesterday, Jagger Eaton took silver. Alex Sorgente, the defending gold medalist in the discipline, took bronze.

Over on the street course, Japanese skater Aori Nishimura was the highest scorer in Women’s Skateboard Street - marking her second gold and fourth medal in the discipline. Nishimura’s tricks from her second and winning run included a kickflip up the Euro gap, backside 50-50 180 out, frontside feeble grind on the downbar, full cab, gap to lipslide on the hubba, 180 up the Euro gap and a backside lipslide on the big rail. Eleven-year-old Momiji Nishiya added to the list of Japanese medalists from the weekend with silver, and defending gold medalist Mariah Duran was bronze.

Closing out the weekend was fan-favorite Dave Mirra’s BMX Park Best Trick, where Mike Varga took home the golden pedal with a tailwhip 900. After the competition ended, fans headed to The Armory to see performances by futuristic surf rock trio, The Blind Shake, and iconic multi-platform rock band, Incubus. X Games Minneapolis will return to the Twin Cities for once more in 2020, from July 16 to 20.

Quotables

Nyjah Huston, Skateboard Street Best Trick gold medalist
“I literally haven’t done that trick in like at least five years. It only works good on certain obstacles and that thing was perfect for it.”

Ivan Federico, Wendy’s Men’s Skateboard Park gold medalist
“It’s like a dream come true! When I was little I always watched the X Games and said one day I would be there.”

Mariah Duran, Women’s Skateboard Street bronze medalist
“I didn’t practice my last trick at all during practice, I just threw it in there and just committed and I guess it paid off.”

Jagger Eaton, Wendy’s Men’s Skateboard Park silver medalist
“It means everything to me, I take so much pride in being able to go out and perform well and the fact that I can walk out with a silver medal...I just feel blessed.”
