Framed | An Exploration of Ireland's Waves of Consequence 15 years ago, Patch Wilson began traveling to Ireland from his native Cornwall to catch incoming swells at the West Coast’s infamous slabs and big wave spots. After a few trips, he fell in love with the coastline, and decided to make it his home. Since then, he’s been weathering the North Atlantic winters there, and holding out for the occasional glimpse of magic among the madness. “Framed” documents some of those moments across the last three seasons. Directed and produced by Joao Tudella. Filmmakers: Joao Tudella, Seth Hughes, Jacob Bartrop, Allan Wilson, Clem McInerney, Kev Smith, Chris Mclean, Mitch Corbet and Jon Bakio. Locations: All around Ireland. I’ve been coming to Ireland to surf for 15 years. When I first started coming I would come for a swell or I would spend a month and I started to see glimpses of the potential, but most of the time I would get skunked. But I still loved the country, the people and the vibe, and I slowly even got to love the weather. With a few more of those trips under my belt I started to realize that if I really wanted to unlock the magic of Ireland it would be best if I spent more time here. And when I stopped chasing swells and was a little more present with my surroundings and the rest of my life, the waves really started showing me what they could do. Along that journey I met a young Portuguese bodyboarder and photographer. He was pumped on surfing mad slabs, with a keen eye behind the lens and an extremely creative mind. He started shooting everyone, and pretty soon he was spending more time behind the lens than he was on his boog. I knew he was my perfect compatriot to help me compile what has now turned into “Framed.” Now I’ve found myself living in Ireland for over five years. I completely love the place, and when the waves turn on here I really believe it’s as good as anywhere on the planet. The waiting game can be a long one and the winters are harsh, but you get glimpses of magic in the madness that you wouldn’t see elsewhere and I love this place for that.
