Channel Islands "Upright" Fin

The new CI Upright came from a need to balance the CI fin offering. Where the original, highly raked CI fin is more suited to classic down-the-line thrust and drawn out turns, the reality is, most surfers are riding smaller waves and beach breaks that require quicker turns, and a fin that allows for more pivot.

“You’ll find the CI Upright will help you in smaller waves and steep, quick waves, any time where you need quickness of response and the ease of top to bottom transitions”. – Britt Merrick

Where the original CI fin is suited to bigger, better open face waves, the CI Upright has a high rate of return and responsiveness, which means it’s ideal for beach breaks and little waves where need to generate speed quickly.

“The CI Upright will lend itself to any board, but given the lower sweep, it will really suit grovellers and small wave boards where you need a little more get up and go” – Brit Merrick

Channel Islands Surf Team Goes Ham on Spine-Teks

Watch the Channel Islands Surfboard Team enjoying the benefits of a surfboard technology that offers next-level performance advantages you can truly feel. With any CI model built in Spine-Tek, you'll find that this Eco-Certified construction does the following: Redirects faster, is livelier & more sensitive, and maintains its flex memory.

Optimized Flex Available in Three Sizes:
Small - 25.9 Liters & below
Medium - 26 - 36.5 Liters
Large - 36.6 Liters & Over

"Spine-Teks are super light and frisky,” says Sebastian Zietz. "You get lots of load and spring off the bottom, and through turns. It’s definitely the future of surfboards.”

Spine-Tek built boards are more responsive, and, like a spring, they wind up on energy, provide pop, accelerate out of turns whilst holding speed down the line, and the “spine” keeps its flex pattern unlike timber which loses it over time.

"These Spine-Tek boards have reinvented the way I’m looking at small waves,” explains Pat Gudauskas. "The boards are lighter, faster and have great pop—it’s opened up more speed and overall creativity."

Surfer in order of appearence: Dane Reynolds, Parker Coffin, Eithan Osbourne, Noah Waggy, Luke Swanson, Tanner Gudauskas, Pat Gudauskas, Michael Dunphy, Connor O'Leary, Yadin Nicol.

NeckBeard 2 - Parker Coffin

Watch Parker Coffin on the very board that inspired the FishBeard.

When something isn’t broke, there’s no need to fix it. That said, Britt Merrick and Dane Reynolds still felt a few slight refinements would make an already epic board that much better. And it did: The NeckBeard 2 is obviously an update to the original NeckBeard, and it was made as our entry into Stab and Dane’s surf film “The Electric Acid Surfboard Test.”

A big fan of single concave, Dane asked Britt to take out the vee from the original NeckBeard, creating single throughout. This changed the rocker landscape some, but in a very positive way—enhancing its wave entry, down-the-line speed, and overall control. They also widened the tail block 1/2” and added a slight hip, resulting in increased responsiveness and maneuverability.

Parker is riding his in PU, but it’s also quite popular in EPS Spine-Tek, and its pop has made it the board of choice for wave pools as evidenced by Eithan Osbourne wining “highest air” at the Stab High event in Waco.

CI Mid in Bali: Jared Mell Session

Known for his irreverent attitude and cruisey surf style, Jared Mell recently rode a CI Mid for his first time, and it sure had us wishing we could jump on a plane right now and head over to join in the fun.

The CI Mid is a modern classic design resulting from a fun collaboration with Devon Howard, a southern California surfer that has spent the past two decades riding and refining egg-inspired designs that are in a category of boards many refer to as midlengths.

Inspired by the clean, longer-railed lines drawn by traditional eggs and single-fins, the CI Mid infuses that timeless vibe with the crispness, sensitivity, and freedom made possible by modern features synonymous with Merrick design principles. Boasting a sleek, egg-like template with low entry rocker and foam a tad forward for ease of paddle and effortless trim speed, the CI Mid scoots, squirts and swivels thanks to contemporary features like double-barrel concave, gradually accelerated rocker, and hard, slightly tucked rails through and off the tail.

A reliable all-arounder that flies over the flatter, smaller stuff, the CI Mid really stands apart from other eggs and various midlength designs out there, especially in shoulder-high to nearly double overhead point surf—where surfers are able to lay down flowy, arcing turns with total confidence, speed, and control.

The minimalist logo is out of the Channel Islands Archives—a lam Al put on his boards in the early ’70s—all CI Mids are stocked with high quality, colorful resin craftsmanship (6-4oz. decks with 6oz. bottoms).

This Video was made possible by Channel Islands Bali and Charlie Stambolieff, and was filmed by Maximillian Brunette @maximillian_brunette and @23mavrick.

FishBeard by Channel Islands Surfboards

Watch Channels Islands Surfboards' team shred the super fun and fast twin-keel fin design called the FishBeard.

Surfers in order of appearance: Parker Coffin, Conner Coffin, Sebastian Zietz, Eithan Osbourne, Yadin Nicol, Mikey February, Cliff Kapono, Alex Gray, Patrick Gudauskas, Tanner Gudauskas, Dane Reynolds and then Parker again.

With enthusiasm and design input from Parker Coffin, the FishBeard is pure business in the front and all party in the back. Get forward on this user-friendly board and drive from the center and you’ll have all the speed and flow you always desired. Step back on the tail to engage the fins and rails, which provides you hold, pivot, projection and the freedom to rip as hard as ever. To keep the party going, we dug into the archives and found some vintage mid-’80s, fluorescent logos and recreated CI’s iconic layup from that era.

For maximum performance, we highly recommend pairing the board with Futures AMK Keel Fins. Although inspired by classic keel outlines, the all-new AMK template boasts a modern rake shape, graduated tip flex and flat inside foils finely tuned for fast, high-performance surfing. This keel-fin design is built to shred but also ideal for those that just want to groove.

Noa Deane Flairs Out On A Dane Reynolds-Inspired Channel Islands Fish Beard

Noa Deane and Dane Reynolds share a lot in common, not least of which a beefy physique—both are 200lb grown men who fly higher than surfers several weight classes lower.

In fact, after Dane buckled the two CI Neck Beard II's he'd brought to Stab High to play around in the Waco pool, he grabbed one of Noa's LSDs, markered over the conflicting sponsor stickers, and paddled out for his first heat.

Noa for his part is an unabashed Dane apostle, a fan since day dot and one of the highest profile of his generation to wear Dane's influence on his sleeve. We first started talking to Noz about being our Acid Test subject after hearing how many times he'd watched Dane's first film with us (30+ when we checked in two years ago, double now, at least).

While we were immediately enthused about having Britt Merrick and the Carpinteria CI crew into basically building an exact replica of Dane's Acid Test Neck Beard II, we were more than pleased to find out Dane and Britt, along with Parker Coffin, had been working on a new modified Neck Beard model, the Fish Beard, a twin-keeled swallow tail with an outline from the tail's nadir forward ripped straight from the beloved chop-tailed best seller.

Britt Merrick Breaks Down the new Channel Islands FishBeard

Parker Coffin said it first: “A NeckBeard 2 would work sick as a keel-fin fish!” So we go to work redesigning the back half of the NB2 template and rocker, paired the board with our CI Keel Fins, and the FishBeard was born.

The FishBeard is pure business in the front and all party in the back. Get forward on this user-friendly board and drive from the center and you’ll have all the speed and flow you always desired. Step back on the tail to engage the fins and rails, which provides you hold, pivot, projection and the freedom to rip as hard as ever.
