When Everywhere Pumped: Classic Perfect Winter Surf In Australia We knew it’d be good. We didn’t know it’d be this good. The swell that doubled down along the Australian east coast on the weekend had been lurking around the forecast charts for at least a week. It looked like a classic mid-winter reversal of form — a swell from the east after three months of south? This is kinda predictable, we all hope for it. But as the winds began to build in the northern Tasman Sea last Thursday night, some kind of switch was flicked, and within 48 hours, everywhere from Straddie to Sydney was lighting up. It was the kind of surf people travel thousands of k’s to find, yet here it was, right on everyone’s doorsteps. Here’s a look at 2024’s best weekend so far. Cloudbreak On Fire! Fantastic Fiji barrels with two swells back to back Summer in Fiji is HOT. The days are longer, and the sun feels like it’s suspended directly above you — which in early February, it pretty much is. Sit for long enough in the open water lineup at the amazing Cloudbreak Reef, and it’ll feel as if your eyeballs are about to fall clean out of your head. Yet for two and a half days last week, that’s what a bunch of very good surfers did: sat there as long as they could stand it, because Cloudbreak wasn’t just hot, it was on fire. The reef is exposed to south and SW swells moving up from deep storms in the Southern Ocean and travelling up between Australia and New Zealand — out of the cold and into the tropics. A three to four day journey during which they grow clean and straight, yet hang on to that South Pacific energy. Easterly trade-winds complete the picture. This doesn’t often happen in February. It’s a Southern Hemisphere winter thing, and February is tropical cyclone time in these parts. But when a couple of very off-season storms flared in Fiji’s sweet spot, a happy few jumped on various planes and got there just in time to ride. In the lineup: Ian Walsh, Balaram Stack, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Nathan Hedge, Dean Morrison, Max Beach, Che Slatter, Eden Edwards, Sean Lopez, Tosh Tudor, Ben Wilson, Navi (surname), Dane Snelton, and quite a few more. Mick Fanning at PERFECT Pumping Snapper Rocks Australia's Gold Coast recently came alive with a never ending run of back-to-back swells. In late April, as the WSL's Championship Tour was doing business on Australia's southern and west coasts, the more northern Gold Coast came alive, and Simon "Shagga" Saffigna (legendary longtime friend and filmer to Mick Fanning), Joel Parkinson and Dean "Dingo" Morrison, was there to capture all of the action. When the dusted had settled we needed to investigate, so we rang Mick to get the down low. After a marathon stint of waves you'd forgive a surfer for sounding a little low on energy but when Mick answered our call he was full of life and happy to have a chat. So happy, in fact, that we turned the conversation into the soundtrack for the edit above. We think you'll agree it explains the crazy visuals perfectly.
