Nyjah Huston tops the Podium at the Red Bull Hart Lines skateboarding contest

Today Nyjah Huston took first place in the event with a dominating performance including tricks like a backside 180 to fakie nosegrind down the gap to hubba, a half cab kickflip down the stairs, and a 270 lipslide on the big handrail.

When asked what stands out most about this competition, Huston responded “Everything stands out about this contest compared to anything else I’ve ever skated. The most challenging thing was the time aspect, it’s an awesome part of it.” Huston went on to say the following about his fellow competitors, “The group was awesome! A lot of my good friends, but also some of the best skaters in the world are here. It’s a good group and was super competitive today.”

Last year’s champion Curren Caples also returned with a vengeance securing a solid second place finish with a gap noseblunt slide down the hubba and a frontside bluntslide on the bank to wall. Belgian skater Axel Cruysberghs was one of the fastest skaters through the course and rounded out the podium in third place with a hurricane down the handrail and a frontside feeble grind down the long flat bar.

Upon completion of the finals and awards ceremony, the Best Trick contest presented by BFGoodrich got underway with a 30-minute jam session. Everyone brought out their A-game but in the end Canada’s own Ryan Decenzo took home top honors with a few banger tricks including a kickflip frontside lipslide and a sugarcane off the bump. Decenzo rode away with a brand new set of BFGoodrich tires along with a handful of cash. David Reyes was an animal, not stopping until he landed a kickflip backside over crooked grind on the big rail and a gap frontside crooked grind to earn him second place. Trevor McClung, one of the crowd favorites, landed a clean switch backside 360 ollie to secure third.

In addition to all the professional action, six Detroit area skate shops each comprised of two local amateur athletes battled it out on Saturday in the Motor City Grind Shop Battle. In the end, Brent BehmIn addition to all the professional action, six Detroit area skate shops each comprised of two local and Pat Galloway not only earned local bragging rights, but also brought home the trophy for Farmington, MI based Plus Skate Shop. Each skater also won a scholarship to the famed Camp Woodward, the pre-eminent action sports camp in the world. Galloway put together a big frontside wallride on the bank-to-wall feature while Behm’s frontside feeble grind down the long flat bar and his clean backside 360 down the stair set (which the judges felt was the strongest single trick of the shop battle) secured them the top spot. “It’s like the biggest honor I’ve ever received,” said Behm after the contest. “I’d just like to thank Rob from Plus Skate Shop for supporting me and of course Ryan [Sheckler] for hosting this event. And shout out to Good Do Up skateboards and my family.”
