Maiko Miyasaka & Dhany Widianto Take Wins at Jialeshuei 2025

Maiko Miyasaka and Dhany Widianto Win Shortboard Divisions on Day 2 of the 2025 Pingtung Jialeshuei International Surfing Competition in Taiwan

After a lay day yesterday due to extreme wind conditions, the 2025 Pingtung Jialeshuei International Surfing Competition, part of the APSS Asia Tour Taiwan, resumed this morning in gusty, wind-affected 2–4 foot waves. The Men’s and Women’s Shortboard Semifinals were completed first to determine the finalists, followed by the Finals—where champions were crowned amid challenging conditions.

Miyasaka Claims Women’s Shortboard Title

Japan’s Maiko Miyasaka was unstoppable in the Women’s Shortboard Division, taking the win with her precise and powerful backhand surfing—carving deep bottom turns and throwing buckets of spray off the lips despite the tricky winds.

“I’m so happy to get this win—I finally did it!” said Miyasaka, who was last year’s runner-up and came determined to claim the title this year. “The conditions were different from last year. It was bigger but also challenging because of the wind, and it was hard to find a good wave. I was nervous going into the final, but it helped me focus and make better decisions. I only caught four waves, but two of them were good enough to get the scores I needed to win.”

Indonesia’s Dhea Natasya, fresh off her win at the APSS Dongsha Open of Surfing in Zhoushan, China, delivered another strong performance but couldn’t quite match Miyasaka’s scoring pace, finishing second. She will, however, retain her APSS Women’s Shortboard rankings lead after today’s result.

Widianto Extends His Winning Streak

On the Men’s side, Indonesia’s Dhany Widianto continued his incredible run after winning both the Shortboard and Longboard Divisions at last week’s Dongsha Open in China. Widianto went to the air multiple times in today’s final, landing two big maneuvers that earned excellent scores of 8.33 and 8.67, putting his opponents in a combination situation for most of the 20-minute heat.

“The conditions out there were hard for sure—the wind was really strong—but when I found the right waves it was really good,” said Widianto. “In the final I knew I had to go all in, so I just went big in the air and hoped to get high scores from the judges.”

He was well rewarded for his commitment. When asked what he planned to do with his prize money, Widianto smiled and said, “I’m going to give it to my mom to help her build her house in Java.”

Runner-up Kishore Kumar of India, competing in his first APSS Final, started strong with a 6.83 followed by a 5.70, but couldn’t find another quality wave to improve his total and settled for second place.

Strong Showing from Team India

Notably, India’s eight-person shortboard team made an impressive debut in their first APSS and Taiwan appearance. Two male surfers—Kishore Kumar and Babu Sivaraj—reached the Men’s Final, while Sugar Shanti Gayen made it to the Women’s Final.

Coach Samai Raboul expressed pride in his team’s performance:

“I’m really proud of each and every one of them,” said Raboul. “They all gave their all, but there’s still some meat left on the bone, as they say. They’ve been working super hard, and I’m very satisfied with their results today. It’s great to be here in Taiwan to surf, compete, and gain new experiences.”

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow will see the conclusion of the APSS divisions at the 2025 Pingtung Jialeshuei event, with the Men’s and Women’s Longboard Semifinals and Finals scheduled to start in the morning.

After competition wraps, there will be a Surfers’ Party in Hengchun tomorrow evening—celebrating the event alongside the local community.
