Sally Fitzgibbons' long-awaited return atop the podium ended in success following her induction to the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame and first US Open win since 2011, taking down Southern California's Bella Kenworthy. Then, history was made with Alan Cleland defeating event threat Marco Mignot in the dying seconds to claim his first, and Mexico's, first US Open of Surfing title. Last Training Sessions Before The Olympic Surfing Begins For the past week and a half at Teahupo’o, in a range of surf conditions, a super eclectic bunch of surfers have been working their ways toward peak form — trying to set themselves for one of the great events of their lives. Some of this crew are world professional champions, some are virtual newcomers to this level of competitive skill. Most are somewhere in between. All will soon be surfing in the Olympic Games round one heats. Here’s a look at some of the intensity on show prior to competition.
